The trackworkers themselves may not be incompetent but it may have been that the engineers who planned the job were. Several years ago the outer loop track at So/Fy was relaid and the engineers measured the clearances with calculators rather than the old fashioned way of taking the actual measurement. The result was that the first train that passed through scarped the roof of the station. Service into the station had to be suspended for a while and #1 trains had to be turned at Rector St while emergency work had to be done which involved chipping out the newly installed concrete roadbed and reinstalling it with the proper clearances. Similar situations occurred along the Brighton Line when new track was installed several years ago and the height distance between the car levels and platform levels was too great. |

Having #1 service suspended for the first set of renovation work, and then having service suspended again for a second time. Not pleasant. Mike |

I don't think that the tracks were redone with the wrong code rail, but that the Track Dept failed to regrade the roadbed to compensate for the heavier rail that was being installed. |

Not to mention the new (now out of service indefinitely) South Ferry station which did not open as scheduled because there was too much of a gap between the platform and the cars. |
