Chicago CTA 'L' Sleet/Ice/Snow Mechanisms (Photos) |
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Thu Feb 6 12:21:14 2014 Chicago's 2013-14 winter record has been a test for the sleet/ice/snow mechanisms, including the sleet scrapers on the trucks and the antifreeze solution (paste) applied to the third rail. All CTA cars have 8 manually operated sleet devices on each two pairs of cars. These devices can be operated by the operator or by yard personnel at terminals. One or two trains on a line would apply antifreeze. The CTA of course operates an open third rail.... traces back to the 1892 World's Fair Columbian Exposition. The gravity trolley pickups were first used in England. The devices would not work if a covered third rail is used. The sleet scraper devices are mounted on the ends of the trolley blocks, raised or lowered by inserting a wooden handle. The sleet scrapers are electrically connected in the 600 v. circuit. ![]() ![]() |

Where would the antifreeze solution be dispensed within that truck assembly? Or are only certain cars equipped to dispense antifreeze? I have to say I was kind of surprised to see that the CTA ropes off the front of cars operating in revenue service and puts the antifreeze containers and presumably pumps there. I'm not sure I see the advantage of that over a dedicated ice train. |

CTA's video shows the antifreeze solution dripping through/beneath the trolley shoe. I have no idea how they guarantee the 600 v. protection. |

Chicago and Bosto are the only properties, at least in North America that have exposed 3rd rail. As someone who worked for 26 years, and have visited a good majority of the transit companies in the United States and Canada,it is dangerous, and has costed many people their lives, there is no reason at all why Chicago's 3rd rail cannot be covered as well. |

There is this photo by Joe Testagrose from 1969 showing a CTA2200 testing showing a trolley third rail mechanism needed under a covering.![]() I noted that Chicago could have changed "L"/subway in 1939 by using the larger dimensions planned for the Initial Subway System.....but they chose to continue with the same 8'-8" base floor. Also continued was the third rail dimension. The trolley block mechanism was used in almost all car series.....4000, 5000, 6000, 6131, 6511, 1-50, 2000, 2404, 2600, 3200, 5000(2009), 7000. The only exceptions are the two series...6201 and 2200 where the truck designs incorporated a paddle shoe and not the gravity shoe. |
