R33ML TOMC on the Move Again? |
|
Posted by Mysterious Friday 1986 on Sat Jan 4 00:37:48 2014 So I came across this photo here: Photo by DanielRivera24 on FlickrIf the information provided by Flickr's to be trusted, this photo was taken just last Thursday January 2nd. It appears 9011 was at the 145th Street IND Station. Seems to be in the middle of a move. Any ideas? |

Well, the one pictured (9011) and the seven other R33ML cars are of course preserved. Usually they're parked in two groups (4 cars each) just outside the overhaul shops at 207th Street Yard. What's got me curious about this picture is that nowadays, whenever these cars are sent out the yard, it is to retrieve some other car(s). Like last fall they picked up R36WF cars 9586-87 and later on, the R27/30 school cars that were scrapped. So I wonder that, if these cars did go out last Thursday, where did they go and if they went out to retrieve anything? I do have an idea. But we'll probably find out soon where the cars went off to. |

That is true also, as sometimes they go from yard to yard, etc. Just a thought, though. Or just a move into the tunnels as the snow and cold weather pass. |

I won't give it up - obviously, get it out of the snow, but maybe some "work" needed. I'll leave it there. Might be running somewhere soon on the main line of some of the cars in that consist. But like I said, I'll leave it alone. :) |

I seem to recall the TOMC blue stripes being very faded a few years ago, but they seem to have repainted it for the all star game event... perhaps Mr. Sun has started on them again? |

Also in NJ 9400 and 9401 are on their sides now getting copper goodies chopped off and they recycled all the R27/R30 scrap plus all the NJT RTS shells including the shorties. Made enough room for another contract now. |

They did the same with R16 6305 at Coney Island Yard recently. They did an amazing job with this one. Photo by John Barns, taken December 10th.I suspect they harvested the tail lights from one of the R30 school cars that got scrapped. |

I'm sure in due time the number plates will be cosmetically restored. Remember that the people who work on these cars are volunteers. The best thing you could do would be to volunteer yourself. |

Replacing number boards are expensive. Take this for example: with the restoration efforts that are going on with R28 cars 7926-7927 at the Illinois Railway Museum, they're giving the cars new number plates (whick look exactly like the originals). But they cost a lot of money; until recently, IRM was selling extra replacement number boards for $250 a pop. They went to a supplier (the same one NYCT brough from) and they had to pay a good deal for them. So, say they brought new boards for 6305 at that price of $250. That's four boards per car - $1000 total, easy. (Side note: when they get to restoration of the Concourse Redbirds, they'll have to spend thousands just on replacing some of their number boards also...thats if they end up making their own somehow). This doesn't include the paint that had to be brought. And 6305 was painted by workers who volunteered on their own time and didn't get paid to do this. Personally I kind of like the look on the number boards the car currently has. Gives it a retro look towards the rest of the car. |

Its helpful for those cars as I heard its not good for them to sit idle for months/years at a time, using the Museum cars on random work moves gives the car's a decent workout. |
