PHOTOS: PENINSULAR CAMPAIGN

Back in July I "won" a free no-expense paid 3 day, 2 night trip to Williamsburg, VA and all I had to do to get this was attend a wee 4 hours long sales presentation. Yes yes, I was embarking on the traditional American ordeal of the timeshare weekend Thursday through Saturday. Normally I would have probably passed on such an obvious scam, but as luck would have it the CSX Peninsula Sub was the subject of a Level 2 "Railfan Emergency" due to a re-signaling project so that tipped the balance for me and I put down the $75 down payment and booked the trip.

In addition to photographing signals on the Peninsula I also turned off I95 in Doswell, Virgina to check out the railfan hotspot where the RF&P main line crosses the former C&O slow line to Richmond.

You can find all the photos here, but its basically 700 photos of signals so meh.

We begin with what is not the Buckingham Branch shortline headquarters building in Doswell, VA. The BB has leased the former C&O route from Clifton Forge, VA to Richmond via Gordonsville and runs it out of the former RF&P station building in Doswell.

The diamond crossing used to be controlled by the RF&P's HN tower. HN is typical of the all brick, bay windowed towered used by the RF&P and used to support a US&S pneumatic interlocking plant. The HN sign is now missing from the front of the tower. Hopefully it has been preserved and not stolen.

Here is the tower in relation to the diamonds which have a 60/40 speed restriction for RF&P traffic.

The southbound bracket signal at DOSWELL is one of the last "classic" RF&P signals left on the route and was fortunately upgraded in a 2007 re-signaling, saving it from the more recent resignaling effort that felled its kin in 2011/2012. CSX SD40-2 #8867 sits on the Doswell siding with a local freight waiting for a southbound through train to pass.

Here we have two BRAND NEW ES44AC's #3111 and #3112, still paired up after their delivery from the factory and sporting the new ACSII logos. They are at the head of one of the occasional "Juice Stack" trains that runs over this line to/from the NYC area.

Soon after Buckingham Branch GP40 #5 crossed the diamonds on the C&O with a single box car.

Only after that was the local released to continue south to Acca yard and intermediate points.

In addition to SD40-2 #8867 the local was powered by former B&O GP40-2 #6149

In the middle of the consist was Chessie System Caboose #900430.

Once on the Peninsula I found that while the re-signaling project had already marched south through Providence Forge, it still had a ways to go. Still not even modern type tubular aluminum signal bridges are safe from the sterilization teams.

Classic C&O cantilever at NORGE.

Phase III Amtrak Heritage unit #145 northbound with Train 66 at NORGE.

Amtrak #145 taking the Clear westbound signal at NORGE.

Amtrak Williamsburg, VA station.

Interior showing the ticket window. The local bus station was co-located in the other side of the building.

Amtrak P42 #203 arriving with the southbound Train 67.

Passengers disembarking at Williamsburg. The local station agent took possession of some bicycle boxes.

Old C&O station at Lee Hall, VA.

Another C&O cantilever at TOPPINGS.

Back on the road I couldn't resist another stop by Doswell. This time I caught GP40 #5 sitting in the yard along with a pair of GP16's #3 and #8.

I was there just in time to catch southbound Amtrak Train #89 with P42 #186 providing power.

Well that's it. Next time tune in as we swing by Bryn Mawr in the morning.

Yes, I am kidding.

I once sat through a timeshare talk in Cancun, so I know whereof you speak.

You're right and personally I would rate "Limited Enthusiasm" higher.
