I recently took that photo of the blank strip map and added some stops, and analyzed them.

Thanks, but it's unnecessarily confusing to start from 00 instead of from 01.

I have never been on an R142 and R143. Why did they change the system from the previous one that could be programmed to any line of the train was rerouted? That seems to be more flexible. Also, it showed transfers and handicapped stations? Did tests show commuters didn't like it or did the MTA feel it was too much work to keep updating info. I bet the latter is the reason. If commuters didn't like it, it would have shown up in the pre-tests. I wonder why I haven't heard about the before.

SMH…

The R142 and R143 entered service in 2000 and 2001, respectively, and have been serving Brooklyn since the beginning (on the 2 and L lines initially, and later on the 4 and 5).

The R160s were the first cars to include the FINDs, and they were introduced at an open house in late 2005.

They first entered service in August 2006.

What if the train is so crowded it's hard to see out the window or open door? What if you can't see the station signs? Most people can't tell stations apart by their tile color.

Actually, the audience is irrelevant. The manufacturer designated them starting at 00, and so that is what it is. The discussion is on a technical level, and calling the first light 01 would be confusing to anyone who had even a basic familiarity with the unit. If the manufacturer called the first light "Steve" then that is what it would be called.

Books about programming languages are written for humans, but they when they talk about arrays, they usually say that the first element of an array is 0.

And the lights on the strip map can be considered an array of 64 elements.

Given a = new int[64]; (and a language in which the syntax used is valid),
a.length(); returns 64, but a[64]=0; throws an "index out of bounds" error.

The maps are for tourists and occasional riders. If you take the same route everyday, of course you don't need a map. Sometimes I get annoyed with some of you because you act as if everyone is or should be a rail fan and have no respect for anyone else. The majority of riders don't even like trains. They take them out of necessity. I guess the only people in this world that matter to you who who think like this are rail fans. Very short sighted, selfish, and inconsiderate.
