NYCT Scrappings Question

Question to you guys who might happen to know:

As you guys know, the last railcars scrapped off NYCT property occured last October 22nd with R27 8145 and R30 8463. Lately, scrapping's come to a standstill, though I noticed that there are a few cars left on property that have been sitting in storage, including:

- a handful of R33WF cars scattered at Unionport Yard and 207th Street Yard
- 4 R36WF cars at Unionport Yard (9582-85)
- R17 6895 and R21 7267 at Concourse Yard
- R22 7486 at 207th Street Yard

Question: what's the timeline for the rest of these cars to go to scrap? Does this have anything to do with the scrapping of cars already off property? Are there other cars not mentioned going to scrap?

Thanks, guys!

As per my source:

9582-83, 7486, 7267 and 6895 are all marked for scrap. However, no time frame has been established as of yet. When will they go? It could be tomorrow, or it could be a year for now. We may not see any real scrappings until the R179's arrive, which is at least 1 to 2 years before the first train is on the property.

9584 and 85 are still active on the R.A.T.

Remaining R33 Singles: I think its safe to say that the number of ACTIVE R33 Singles is dwindling. As time goes on, we'll see even less of them. The problem is they need to be held as a back up in case the R127's and R134's are unable to go out on the road. In the case of 207th St, it may be possible to withdraw them and replace them with R32's.

239th St and Unionport still need their Redbirds. Corona may not need theirs when all R188's are placed into service. I don't know if the re-deployment of R127's and 134's would help get the R33 Singles off the road, but perhaps the time is coming for NYC Transit to look into getting R142 type work motors. Only time will tell.

I think that we will see 62/A's in work service soon. Just like the 21/22 did a bit early in life.

Thanks Stef for the info. I saw a stringful of R33WF singles on one track in 207 yesterday afternoon which sparked my curiousity. Also saw that most of the Garbage Trains there were using R32s.

This is speculaion on my part, but I can see this once the swap of cars between Westchester and Corona Yards goes into full swing. I'll wager that those single 1900-series cars would be used for Garbage Train duty or Switch Dolly service alongside the R127/134 cars. Maybe one car could potentially replace the Rail Adhesion Car R33ML at Unionport.

Once the Corona/Westchester swap is complete, I suspect that the former singles will be unitized like the rest of the fleet.
