I rode it without even realizing what it was... it's very similar looking to the 142s, I guess. I caught it leaving Queensboro around 3:20 or so. It was jam packed and there were two trains bunched up behind it. |

Ironically, we now have to look for opposite express/local clues as the train enters the station. On the R62As, there is no indication on the large front sign, since the operators were told to leave the circle at all times, and we have to look at the side signs for the constant (green) circle or (red) diamond. But on the R188s, the only constant express/local sign is on the front, with either the (red) circle or (red) diamond. The side signs alternate their displays, so the EXP/LCL isn't always there to see. Interestingly, the interior strip maps show a new express/local distinction, with bulbs being in places I don't recall seeing on the other lines' strip maps, but those can't help you decide whether to board as the train enters the station. |

They could have the destination sign (as in the reading for the destination) be LED red or green depending on express or local - both are easy to read. So if you see a red "Main st Flushing" it is express and green is local. |

There's probably enough room for an "EXP" or "LCL" to remain on the left side of the display throughout. They could also make the 7 smaller and include an EXP or LCL under the smaller 7. Some of the current R62A side scrolls already have this. The important thing is that as the train is entering the station the passengers along the platform can decide whether to board or not, and step either forward or back as appropriate to speed boarding and reduce dwell time. If they don't know until the train stops and then have to wait for the announcement or look at an interior sign, everything slows down. |

Well, the only time that decision needs to be made is during the PM rush hour, as during the AM rush, the express trains are obvious. The side signs are capable of showing strings of text 20 characters long, so strings like these are could be displayed: EXPRESS MAIN STREET LOCAL MAIN STREET LOCAL 111 STREET LOCAL METS-WILETS PT |

Not really... at Grand Central or 5th ave you may hear a train enter, peek down, and if it's not the one you want continue down the stairs at a leisurely pace. Otherwise you're running for a train you don't want. |

Those would be perfect displays, since they would never scroll and the express or local designation would always be displayed. But the TA seems to want "Flushing" to appear (in both directions(!) as the name of the line, not necessarily the destination), requiring a scrolling display with the express or local disappearing every other display. |
