These are good points-- if a red is protecting what is obviously a clear straightaway, a key-by might not be the most reckless thing one could do, but it it's on a curve, trouble could be around the curve.

Worth noting here is that the padded schedule would not be as much of a problem if the terminal had a place to store trains while they wait to go out on schedule. The 7 terminal at Times Square, of course, has no place to store any trains. The trains could be stored on an extra platform or two, or perhaps on tail tracks.

Also worth noting is that if the trains were held to the schedule, padded as it is, they would not back up at the terminal on account of being early. (They could still back up on account of being late.) If a train is scheduled for a 33 minute run, it should take at least, say, 32 1/2 minutes. That is an area where CBTC could perhaps improve performance by introducing a measure of consistency into operations; presumably, part of CBTC would be to hold trains to the schedule as best as possible all along the route.

You can also on weekdays make a same platform transfer from the (J) to the (M) at Essex Street, which means usually waiting a few minutes.

Soundproof windows work only when they are closed. Some people prefer to breathe in fresh air.

The trains could be stored on an extra platform or two, or perhaps on tail tracks.

That would destroy the purpose of the tail tracks.

That is an area where CBTC could perhaps improve performance by introducing a measure of consistency into operations; presumably, part of CBTC would be to hold trains to the schedule as best as possible all along the route.

Padding the schedule means you need more trainsets for a given service level. NYCT solved this problem by reducing service levels.

The given metric for determining on time performance is terminal arrival time. This is what both NYCT and its T/O's are judged. Both NYCT and its T/O's have figured out how to game the system. What you need is a different metric for on time performance that includes intermediate points as well as terminal arrival.

What you are describing is Train Supervision rather than Train Control. NYCT has never had anything but rudimentary train supervision in the form of manually operated holding lights. There are Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) modules as part of CBTC installations. Howerver, ATS does not require CBTC or any other train control system. Inexpensive ATS's are currently used in other systems to achieve 35+ tph.

NYCT's sole effort at ATS - the timers at Grand Central on the Lex express - are designed to accentuate schedule deviations.

What is it with the obsession with so-called "fresh" air? Opening windows is useless most of the year when one has to use either heat or A/C.

So? They have room A/C units then, and tend to stay in the rooms with the A/C.

Many people don't really like air conditioning, even in the summer. It does tend to dry out a room and make breathing more difficult. Unless it's super-hot, I actually prefer a plain electric fan, just to keep the air moving. The things that some take as necessities are not considered necessary or even desirable by others.
