What's the deal with the Blue Line (5) in the Montreal Metro? It doesn't go to downtown. What was the point of it? I know they had and still have plans to make it longer.

Quelle est l'histoire de la Ligne bleue (5) dans le métro de Montréal? Il ne va pas au centre-ville. Quel était l'objectif de la ligne? Je sais qu'ils ont eu et ont encore prévu de l'étendre.

It seems to serve upper income areas. Maybe they wanted a subway too, unlike the typical NYC outer-borough pattern.

I heard that the ends of the line are less affluent.

J'ai entendu dire que les zones proches des extrémités de la ligne sont les zones les moins riches.

Montreal Metro was built by people attempting to ape a Euro-spec system, so the concept of a line not going downtown wasn't that crazy. FWIW, the ridership seemed rather decent when I used it, so conceptually, it works.

You are on notice for your indiscriminate use of French - I normally allow French but there are limits and you reached mine so please stop. By the way, it is the Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues not the other way around, and thanks.

I don't know French. I've been using Google Translate to comply with Bill 101.

Yes, I'm not looking at a map but off the top of my head Line 10 doesn't run particularly close to the city center and the ridership numbers reflect that.

Lines 2, 6, 10, and in a way 5 and 11 don't go to CBD proper, just to transit hubs.

The Blue line (previously Line 5) is to Montreal what the G line is to NYC! ;-)

Right at the beginning (circa 1970), Line 5 was planned as to serve two purposes:
- add subway service to suburbs St-Leonard and Montreal-Nord (now boroughs of a larger Montreal);
- link both branches of Line 2, north of mount Royal (and by doing so, serving dense areas and Montreal University).

Planners studied the possibility of doing so with two different lines but they quickly decide to "merge" the two. Due to lack of funds and never-ending disputes between local and provincial governments and planning agencies, only a 12-stops segment between Saint-Michel (in the east) and Snowdon (in the west) was built. We are still (never ending) discussing a possible 5-stops extension eastward to Anjou borough. As for a line going north-east to Montreal-North, the idea was scrapped long time ago now in favor of a BRT but, guess what, we are still discussing the concept...
