Fridge cars for the win!

Pacific Fruit Express, Juice train, BEER train, and numerous others roll along and take their time and it arrives just fine.

Sure. I shouldn't have implied all fresh food. And we both agree, for the vast majority of stuff a day or two extra crossing the country (less for shorter hauls) doesn't matter.

And not to worry, wasn't being critical there. Trucking costs money as compared to rail, some stuff is critical, some stuff is an awful lot, or too heavy for a truck. There's a lot of food on those intermodals with fridges running on those. Intermodals get the high ball all the way through. I figured some folks weren't aware of that stuff.

When Olog says "liberal," he means "conservative" and when he says "conservative" he means "European feudalist."

Otherwise, he's perfectly alright.

There were overlapping gauntlet (gantlet?) tracks many years before that, probably for better weight distribution on the bridge girders. If you look carefully at the first photo you can see where the gauntlet began. The photo was taken near the end of the bridge where the bridge was much lower and the girders were stronger.

East Chatham is on the main line from Albany and Selkirk to Springfield. Albany-Boston Amtrak goes through there. But even so it could handle a lot more trains.

Like I said, when the same company runs both, there's potentially less conflict, because what management says, goes. Once you have tracks that are owned by exclusively passenger or exclusively freight operators, their priorities are going to be on what their business is, not the other guys'. And to top it off, a lot of railroads DIDN'T survive, at least not as passenger carriers.

Oh, there's also the point where the owner/operators are created and subsidized by the govt., and the passengers are ticket holders, taxpayers, AND voters...

. . . thanks to overregulation and overtaxation of the railroad industry, and competition from the government in terms of building competing modes.
