There is a new program where the newbies will be working in the yards for 3 months before they hit the road. Apparently he was one of them.

With all these 4 and 5 car units there are very few yard jobs today. Not many senior guys around to mentor them and give them "pointers."

The senior guys are the worst guys to have around new T/O's. They're often angry, bitter, arrogant, and impatient. They want to get the moves done ASAP so they can get back to the crew room to watch bootleg movies or play crosswords.

Whoever decided to put new T/O's in the yard for 3 months should be fired. Yeah yeah, I know that when you started you worked the yard for about a year. The yard is the most dangerous place to be.

Sounds like back around my time ... too many retirements, teeyay gets desperate and moves people up front who shouldn't be there without more time in. I was one of those myself and leaped at the opportunity to jump into motors with only a few months on the job.

Train Dude aside, I realized pretty quickly that I was over my head and really didn't like it after a few months. The only thing my class had going for it is that we had REALLY great motor instructors. Many in my class made it to retirement.

The road is easy going station to station. The yard has way too many problems. You're dealing with bad equipment, and different personality types.

I got 5 months in the yard. I think it did make a difference. The senior men that broke me in are not the types working today. Nobody cares about the job anymore. I broke in dozens. Only one OTS guy was fired, nothing I could have seen. There is no pay incentive to take TSS considering hourlies get same benefits, and now as much discipline. In the old days motor instructors got respect they earned from uppers levels. Not anymore. Mught as well be in the cab unless they are running away from trouble
