I just spoke with him via phone at the rehab center a few days ago and he sounded great.It is with deep regret we report the untimely death of longtime member Frank Pfuhler. Frank recently underwent surgery and was in rehab until the other day awaiting discharge. There will be a complete tribute and biography forthcoming! From SLTM:It's my sad duty to report that trolley museum member Frank Pfuhler passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning. Frank as a young man was a key figure in the development of the museum in the 1950s and 1960s, including the acquisition and restoration of car PCC 1001 and the construction of Barn 3. After a hiatus from railfan activities to raise a family, Frank re-joined the museum in 1998 and became an active and passionate volunteer. He was an early and vocal supporter of the Elevating the Collection campaign, and an early adopter of digital technology, having scanned thousands of his and others' photographs for email circulation. Frank would have turned 78 in a few weeks. SLTM |

He will be missedYes, el trailer car #197. For a man of 77 years of age, he poured out his heart and sweat to bring that car back to life. I saw the photos he sent in e-mails of the progress. Frank was a very valuable asset at SLTM. He was a part of the old guard who helped through his volunteerism to make SLTM what it is today. Now, he's gone and someone is needed to fill the void to help complete the Restoration of #197. Shame, that Frank didn't live to see the elevation of the collection. He will be missed. SLTM has lost some of the old guard as of late, so now we look to the future. Volunteers are needed to put down high tech ipods and such and pick up tools and keep those old tech cars running. The Frank Pfuhler photo of the LIRR Rockaway Branch Brooklyn Manor Station with the R-16's above on the Jamaica Line is spectacular.I was surprised that the Brooklyn Manor station is wood. I thought the Rockaway Branch was rebuilt with modern concrete stations in the 1930's & '40's as a Federal WPA Project to "Rapid Transit Specification" for conversion to subway and connection to the Queens Blvd. Line. |

That was true of the stations on the Rockaway Peninsula itself as the original stations were at ground level not on an elevated structure (which was completed in 1942). I belive that New York State partially funded the project as the primary purpose was to eliminate the numerous grade crossings in the Rockaways. |
