At one point during GOH, some R-42s had various additional letters installed on the roll sign that were simple black letters on white background in case the TA decided to come up with a new route that was not covered by the existing alphabet soup. Of course in the event that happened, the line neutral colorless bullet would have eventually been replaced by the appropriate color. |

They are going to rule the #6 again, in terms of R62A's, so why not the politically impotent J line.If it wasn't for the R40M/R42's lifelong delicate nature on a stressful service, they should have put the R42's in Jamaica Yard, and the R32 at ENY after the GOH to keep the St Louis cars out of the rain. |

I rode it all the way to 207 Yard including its last dash on CPW. For some reason it laid up there but was transferred to CIY for stripping of those compressors. 3216 was one of the last ones I operated in August of that year. I'm glad I was a part of that generation. |

They probably need the R42's more than ever, what with the R160's being SMS'd. For every set of R32's transferred from the C to the J, an R160 set goes from the J to the C. The total number of cars assigned to the J/Z stays the same. The only thing that might change this is that since the R32's have been SMS'd they may think they can put a much greater percentage of them in service: there are 222 total, but the C requires only 144. However if they transfer 40 to the J/Z to replace the R42's it would leave a spare factor of only 17% for the R32's, probably too low for those old cars. |
