Actually, being out in the open was just the result of the R-32s being put on the A line. The long run from Grant Av. to 207 St. was still to long in hot tunnels for the cars especially if they only got to run to Lefferts to "cool off". In reality, the goal was to put more cars with functioning Air Conditioning on the C and spread the "wealth". The reason the swap was made with Pitkin was because they are "sister" shops. The move with the R-32 to the J for the summer makes more sense so long as 207th St does not touch the maintenance on the r-160s except for cleaning. It shows that now, someone is at least serious about the issue of the ambient temps. that the R-32s can operate in. |

Since the C is only 8 cars long, but the A is the equivalent of 10 cars long, they had to borrow R42 cars from the J to make the A/C swap until this year. In past summers ENY could spare about 20 R42's to send to the A to supplement the R32's so that the C could be all R46's. They can't do that this summer because the R42's at ENY are needed to make up a shortage of 4-car R160 sets because of SMS. But it means 72% of C's will remain R32's this summer unless they increase the number of R32-R160 swaps with ENY. |

I don't believe in giving your problems to someone else. I believe that you fix your problems. Of course, I lost the argument in 2009 and 2010. The 5 train swap may be a test to see if shifting the R-32s to the J for the summer does work. If it does during the first real heat wave of the summer, you may see more trains swapped. |

R-30s definitely had door controls in all the cabs as did everything from the R-15 thru the 38. In fact as I mentioned in another post, since the R-68s were originally designed to have convertible cabs similar to the R-62s, they also had C/R controls in both cabs. Once it was realized that C/Rs could not safely use the controls in the #2 cabs, they were removed leaving only the #1 transverse cabs with C/R controls. |
