According to the NY Times of Oct 24, 1952, an empty train on the middle track collided full force with a another empty train that was stopped on the middle track. The motorman of the first train was killed, as he absorbed all of the initial impact. He was the cause of the accident because he was proceeding at full speed despite signals against him. He had passed yellow and red signals.

Article also said that the middle track did not have tripper arms at the signals since it was never used for revenue train moves.

Around 1970, or maybe a little later, I rode trains in revenue service on the middle track, including beyond the "End of signal control" sign, which I think was below Burnside.

I remember riding low v's up there in the early 60's and seeing semaphores near the interlocking for concourse yard.

IIRC, the middle track on the Dyre Ave line doesn't have signals either, still to this day.

Not too long ago there was a G.O where the (5) trains was using that middle track.

Correct. No signals on Track Y3, other than protecting the switches on either end.

So, I would imagine that in case of a GO with revenue trains on the track, there's a manual procedure to keep no more than 1 train at a time on the tracks?

Also, do T/Os who operate such trains need any additional training (no pun intended!)?

Makes you wonder that when they built the dual contract els, they did'nt install signaling on the middle track on many of the lines in the first place.

Was'nt the purpose of the midddle track for future express service or for runaround moves in the event of a breakdown??

I remember when the experemented with an Astoria (W) express from Ditmars to QBP about 10 years ago. Did they have signals on that middle track then?? I recall seeing pictures of Standards & Triplexes laid up there, but don't remember seeing signals

Astoria is signalled. So is Jerome (which is a fairly recent installation). That was why they tested the Jerome expresses.

I believe that the center track over Jerome was built to lay up 6th/9th ave el and Lex Ave subway cars. Plus, Burnside Ave is the only express station on the line. It was used mainly to terminate el trains. If they really wanted express service over Jerome, they would have made 167th St/River Ave an express stop and signalled the center track right up to the end. After all, it was the first stop northbound where the elevated and subway lines joined together.
