Denver's LRVs have cloth upholstered seats and they've held up well. Vandalism is less of a problem out here, it seems.

I rode on an R-16 Moe in October of 1986 along the Nassau portion, probably from Canal to Essex. I remember lloking at those slanted door pockets and thought, that's funny, I don't remember that. Mind you, the only other time I ever rode on them was in 1967.

October or late September of 1986 is definitely when the R-16's came to the M line. I remember because it coincided with other things going on in my life at the time.

Before late 1986, I have no clue when a 16 last wandered onto the M line.

I left the city in Aug 1957 but the love affair with the R-16's was still going on with the Jamaica travelers at that time.

The silly thing was that it seemed to be the lighting and the red cushioned seats.

The craftsmanship is remarkable. If I didn't know better I would have thought that feature was from the factory. At least from the sight of it. I never rode those those cars so I am in no way familiar with how well the work functioned but the look is 'sano' as they say in the car world.

Although the R-16s first home was the BMT Eastern, they probably as much as the R-10s were also tailor made for the A Line. I suspect that if there had been as many R-16s ordered as R-10s, that the R-16s would have replaced the R-10s on the A.

there is truth in what you say..
the R10 were to be split between the BMT EAST and 8th ave line services..but that never happened..only during the 50's did the east get 50 R10 cars..while the A received 50 R16..

The swap lasted only a few years..as the 16 were proven to be not as reliable as the thunderous workhorses.
personally..i never liked the 16s much..even as a kid. was happy as heck to see them gone from the QJ..pissed as hell to see em come back to the east on the LL.

In 1955 I bet the MTA would have wanted to show off it's new Coney Island route by putting the R16's on the D. If there wasn't such a BMT car shortage, I bet that's where they would have went, even if 200 cars couldn't cover the entire line's needs.

If that were truly the case, then the newest cars on the IND in 1954 when the D went to CI, the R-10s would have been transferred to the D since there were certainly enough of them to fully equip that line.
