You have to remember that the IND plans- and money- did not forsee the NYW&B going belly up in 1937. Had they known, perhaps the Burke Ave extension of the 205th St "D" might have tied into the former right-of-way at Eastchester Rd- or something else. My guess is that they didn't know exactly what do do with the NYW&B trackage till after the war.

Many of the iND second system plans for the Bronx were formulated before eh NYW&B went belly up. Once the city took over the NYW&B some of the plans changed particularly those for a subway along Morris Pk Av which would have almost paralleled the newly acquired NYW&B ROW.

That must be why they put those knee walls in at 81st St. Going n/b, expresses were going full tilt at that point and when the R-10s thundered by, you got an earful if you were standing on the platform.

I am reminded of an incidelt last July on the museum old timers. We rode on the Fulton St. express tracks out to 80th, then turned back. There were several kids at the railfan window, and as we went by one of the local stops, one of them said, "Full speed ahead!". That was nothing compared when we went up CPW at the of the day. When we hit 81st St., we were flying, the bull and pinion gears wailing away at A-440. That was when we were truly moving full speed ahead.

Does anyone wonder why the Northern State Pky takes a hard right before Mineola & then a hard left like an S turn beyond the Meadowbrook before going due east??
Story has it that when they were building the Northern State, he Mr Moses, insisted that the Hwy take that routing as to avoid destroying (eminant domaining) many of his well heeled friends estates in that area.

Knowing Moses ruthless reputation it seems quite plausable that this happened.

Anyone else hear that??

the tunnel goes as far as avenue H...A extension could be built to the Bay Ridge line for a proper island platform station on the row.
didn't the TA planned to do that..but without the station a few years ago?

yes there is..

the A does not operate as many trains as it did back in the day..
there are THREE services that operate on Fulton st during miday..FOUR during the peak periods..yet you can wait as long as 20 minutes for a train at that station.

i HAVE..many times.

The merge point here slows up service..and the Fulton local were never suppose to be on those tracks in the first place.

I was wondering about one of the bulkhead rollsigns on the R1/9 that read: "Houston/Essex"....that would have been the station. Near the ending of the 2nd Avenue station middle tracks (which continues 535 ft after the station; B5 and B6 tracks, I believe), the tracks begin to separate and end at bumper blocks. At the end of the tracks at the bumper blocks, there is a provision of a center track which only extends about 30 feet and it stops at the bulkhead or a diamond
crossover at the end of the tunnel.
