for those of us 3k miles west, what kind of cars are "premium class"? Are they just bi levels w/nicer seats?

Nope, they're bilevels with the same seats!

But they're reserved and I think they have cart-based beverage service.

Basically, you're paying $20 more to ensure that you don't have to stand for 2 hours. And yes, there is a cart selling drinks and snacks (although how does that work with no way to get a cart up and down the stairs?)

Who knows, if it turns out to be a slow news day, maybe the story might make the 11 PM news.

I thought there was just a bar area at the end of the car...

Yeah, there's a cart at the vestibule level of each of the Hampton's Reserve Cars.

Oh, and the Hamptons Reserve cars' seats do also have cupholders and more baggage space on the lower level. That's basically the only differences between them and the rest of the fleet.

I took a video but was disappointed. No Cannonball Drumhead on the train.

I thought it was more than just a cart but actually (small) serving counter in the vestibule level spot where the 5 seats that face each other normally are... Maybe they've done some remodeling since I last saw them (~2002) and there is just empty space to roll a cart?

.

Since the cars have upper and lower levels, I guess the beverage carts stay on the platform level situated at the car ends ?

Presumably. Some people suggest they might have replaced the carts with counters. If I get the chance to ride, I'll see.
