Out west of the Mississippi, Piggy backs may have happened.

Third Rail Northwestern Pacific.

No, that's not Long Island.

These Northwester Pacific Third Rail Electric cars will later be transferred to Pacific Electric, modified, and run on a fan trip.

Interurban Electric of Berkley

Interurban Electric Railway Company ROW next to Southern Pacific Electric ROW

Pacific Electric at the Terminal

Street running. Singles and doubles.

And on a private ROW

Remember those Northwestern Pacific Electrics? Well here they are again, but now with trolley poles.
FROM THE KEN HARRISON COLLECTION
Pacific Electric
5 car blimp trip on American Avenue
June 30, 1957
In this picture of the 5 car train of ex-NWP cars on the fan trip, I believe the limitation on train length was because of the motorman's brake valve, as well as some other details in the brake system. When delivered to the NWP, all the cars had a brake valve with no equalizing piston, which means that train length was limited. When the brake valve has an equalizing piston, train length is limited only by the capacity of the drawbars. It is, however, standard with all interurban and suburban mu equipment that no more than 10 motor cars may be MUed at any one time because of the current capacity of the control circuits. I thought PE upgraded the brake systems on all of the ex-NWP cars (the one at Perris has been), but perhaps they didn't. I'll have to check around. All the SP cars (including the ones which didn't go to the PE) were not subject to this limitation. PE liked the NWP cars because they would go 50 or 55 mph, and they were quite disappointed with the SP cars, which were designed to go 43 mph. The ex-SP were subject to a series of modifications to improve their performance. I know of no reason why an NWP car couldn't be MUed with an ex-SP car, but I'm not that familiar with the PE's daily practices

Great pictures!

I think interurbans may be the last "shoe" to drop in the electric rail resurgence (if it continues). We're getting close...

We are all fortunate that rail fans before us had the foresight to capture them, so we too could see what they saw.

THIS is exactly what is lacking right here in Easton, Pa. I mean, the Lehigh Valley area is so car oriented and the bus line is nothing. We had the Liberty Bell Line and passenger service to everywhere like many other places in the U.S.. Interurbans and inter-state lines would be excellent ways to serve transit shortfalls here. SEPTA still stays away from us and only financial subsidies would make them get involved. I AM A DREAMER.

It's difficult to say these cars were ordered as part of a piggyback order because the NWP, Interurban, and Pacific Electric were all subsidiaries of Southern Pacific. Assuming they're all the same type of car from the same manufacturer, saying they're piggybacks is a bit like saying the M3s ordered by the LIRR piggybacked on the Metro-North order of the same.

One has to wonder at how different California would be today if Arthur Jenkins hadn't been corrupted by the NCL into providing patently false testimony before the CPUC about the impact of abandoning PE. LAMTA was involved by 1953, just four years after the abandonment of the Pacific Electric, so it's not that great a stretch to imagine the City government stepping in to protect their citizens from NCL's liquidation.

And again, you can link directly from DavesRailPix rather than copying the photos to a Photobucket account.

Yes, California's high speed rail system is getting close to being built. After all, today 220mph high speed rail fits the same role as a 50mph interurban did at the turn of the century.

I rather had in mind the ability to use less expensive infrastructure (than HSR) and city transit system infrastructure for intercity travel that doesn't justify HSR.
