When you ride for free, you are supposed (if necessary) to sit on your parent's lap.If the child takes up the space of a full sized person, they get to pay the full-sized prayer. ROAR |

At one time age was the criterion for determining who pays but it was changed some time ago. The problem with using height is that a child as old as 8 or 9 may be short enough to qualify for a free ride. |

Does that mean they get to ride free their whole life or only when accompanied by someone taller who pays? |

That would appear to be the case based on the MTA's height policy which is why I think the MTA should return to age as a criterion. |

Birth certificates are not the sort of thing that people tend to carry with them. Nor should they. And in any event, birth certificates lack photos. You can carry around anyone's birth certificate and claim it as your own. |

The people don't pay for there kids even if there kids are taller then 44' anyway, so what the big dame deal. I seen kids 10, 11, 12 still go under the turn stile or walk pass the B/O with out paying. There is also a rule that say only 2 free kids per full fare, I seen 3,4,5 even 8 kids go under with only one full fare paid. |

But even years ago, when bus operators attempted to enforce the fare (and I understand why nowadays, they do not), they'd let a kid was exactly 6 ride for free. But how do you verify age? Some sort of easily verifiable standard was needed. I don't know when the rule was changed to 44 inches. But it's reasonable. Again, it goes back to the growth spurt issue- maybe at 5'9" and a few days short of 45 y.o., I should ride with my mother and she can tell the NYCTA personnel that I'm 5, I just look mature? Obviously, a deliberately ridiculous argument, but my point is that you need an easily verified rule. If your 4 or 5 year old really is just huge for his age, take it as a blessing- maybe he'll get a pro sports contract, or at a minimum, he'll be able to deal with school bullies. Both can be good things. |

Up to age 5 you were free, 6 and up full fare on the subway.Lot of cities (phila. comes to mind at 42 inches) used height, because you can fake age more easily than height. I don't know when they changed to height on the MTA. As to fairness, it's always unfair to somebody when someone gets on the subway free while another pays, and there has to be some dividing line. In a way height makes more sense, if you consider that a smaller kid (as opposed to simply a younger kid) can sit on a parent's lap. IIRC non-paying kids were not supposed to be taking up a seat, though I don't know when they ever enforced that. Whether a parent can afford it is not an issue as deciding between age and height. |

It was "LITTLE enough to ride for free, LITTLE enough to ride your knee," meaning that a child riding for free should not occupy a seat of his or her own (when someone paying a fare wanted to sit). Note that it was "LITTLE," not "YOUNG" -- I don't know what the rule was at the time the poster came out (whether it was height-based or age-based), but the free riding privilege changed to height-based about 20 years ago to avoid arguments.David |

On NJ Transit trains, they have a weekends/holidays perk where kids 11 years old and under can ride for free with an adult present. The funniest is when there is a "girl" sitting there, with a 38 DD chest and more makeup on her face than a cheap hooker, and when asked for her ticket, the "adult" accompanying her says, "oh, she's 11 years old"... :-) |

A friend of mine who worked in stations offered me this:The height of 44 inches was the height of the tall metal box which was used for depositing tokens if all turnstiles were out of order. It was called a NRFB- Non Revenue Fare Box. When the tokens went to the great transit system in the sky the NRFBs were removed. If a child was taller than the box they had to pay an adult fare. There is also a limit of three children per adult fare. That means if you were traveling alone and had four kids in tow you'd pay two fares. if you had 6 kids, 3 go in with you, one kid buys a fare card and the last two go in with the kid who bought a card. What I'd do is see if there is another adult around and tell you "The other child can go in with the other adult. I'd tell them I'd watch your child so the other adult could not hurt your child. If they cussed me out, then I'd tell them the kid has to buy a card. |

Everybody should have a state issued photo ID card with embedded biometrics and RFID. It can be used for any government purpose. Fare card, voter ID, health care, welfare, tax ID number etc etc.LION proposes that it has two numbers on it: Your PUBLIC number: people --employers (if we still have any employment)-- can add money to your account, and a PRIVATE number (embedded in machine code) that in necessary to receive benefits via the card. Your fingerprint on a turnstile reader, or at a liqueur store reader is all that is needed to use the card, thus the physical possession of the card will not enough to steal an identity. This has been going on for many years, way before the "give them the pickle" video. The trouble is... since children are not required to carry ID, there's no way to prove how "young" somebody is. What we like to do is ask the "kid" what year they were born, and sometimes that's when they give themselves away... :-) |
