NJ Transit announces expanded North Jersey Coast rail service

By Christopher Robbins, NJ.com
on May 22, 2013 at 2:48 PM, updated May 22, 2013 at 2:49 PM
NEWARK — Using NJ Transit trains in southern Monmouth can be an exercise in frustration – but an expanded service will alleviate those headaches for the summer.

The trains run infrequently, slowly and there is sometimes a wait to transfer from the diesel trains running between Bay Head and Long Branch to electric trains running north toward Hoboken and New York City, leading many summer shore-goers to elect to suffer through highway traffic or forgo their visits entirely.

The transit agency in conjunction with Gov. Chris Christie has announced four new weekend express trains between New York Penn Station and Long Branch, and the resumption of hourly service south to Bay Head. The expanded services will begin June 2.

“NJ Transit is committed to making the trip down the shore quick, convenient and comfortable for the hundreds of thousands who will return to our world-class beaches and boardwalks this summer following Superstorm Sandy,” Transportation Commissioner James Simpson said.

Starting June 2, NJ Transit will debut new, enhanced weekend/holiday rail service to and from shore towns along the North Jersey Coast Line. This service includes:
  • The addition of two new morning express trains from New York Penn Station, which will leave at 8:01 am and 10:01 am on Saturdays, Sundays and on holidays. These new express trips will save customers up to 16 minutes off the normal trip, and will allow customers to change at Long Branch for service to Bay Head.

  • The addition of two new evening express trains, leaving Long Branch at 4:57 pm and 6:57 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and on holidays. These new express trips will save customers up to 17 minutes from their normal trip.
Hourly service for the summer season will resume between Bay Head and Long Branch on June 2, with 12 new trains.

Additional weekday service will also return to the North Jersey Coast Line starting June 2, including more trains operating between Hoboken and Bay Head.

“NJ Transit is committed to being a good neighbor and supporting the businesses and the communities along the Coast Line,” NJ Transit Executive Director James Weinstein said. “The addition of new weekend express service from New York and the return of Bay Head service from Hoboken and Long Branch is critical to keeping the Jersey Shore moving this summer.”

The agency is still exploring a train route through interior portions of Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties that would run from Manchester and connect with existing tracks at Monmouth Junction with stops in Freehold and Manalapan.

New schedules will be available on njtransit.com starting Thursday, May 23.

Still have to make the dumb transfer at LB. Instead of adding extra NJCL electrics, they should run more through diesels from Newark, where demand from Manhattan can be absorbed by existing NEC service, Trains can then run express between NPS and Matawan. I am willing to bet a majority of the demand for summer service to the Jersey Shore is intra-state, not from NYC.

Actually the new schedules are already posted to the website. In addition to the NJCL changes, all NJT commuter rail timetables except Atlantic City are being reissued effective June 2.

Why would that happen? Unless a diesel was cancelled, the electric should always wait for the diesel for the connection, and vice versa.

I did not notice that to be the case when I took a train to Asbury Park last summer. Loaded from NY, though the majority went south of Long Branch

The extra trains are actually semi-expresses running 8 - 9 minutes in advance of the normal Long Branch locals. (no thru trains to Bay Head, no dual-modes, maybe next year).

2 of the 4 Rahway locals are extended to South Amboy as well.

Even though the expresses stop at Newark (no SEC, no EWR), and at Elizabeth and Rahway, they do NOT appear on the NEC schedules.

There's always a pad, up to 15 minutes, because the NJCL is so damned unreliable.

I was thinking this would be the perfect runs to test the dual modes on. I guess Amtrak still isn't convinced they can be run reliably yet.

Sadly correct. You'd think NJT would jump at the chance to turn the expresses from NYP into ALP-45DP-powered direct trains to Bay Head.

The trains from Hoboken are direct, IIRC.

The last time I saw one of the weekend Hoboken - Bay Head expresses at Newark about 8 years ago, it was 6 cars and not well patronized.

They are only 9 available, the rest damaged by Sandy, and still in the Hoboken phase of their life, though they did cover all the MDT trains on a weekend a couple of months ago. They can only handle 8 MLV cars.

Those ran mainly to fuel the diesels in Hoboken. I lived near Matawan at the time, and on weekends if I wanted to visit NYC, I took the morning eastbound and the afternoon westbound to avoid the crazy 72XX trains... And you are right, ridership was paltry. They ran 6 car sets, but they only had 2 cars open IIRC, and they could have gotten away with 1 car open most of the time...

8 is fine for an express run, bypassing all that demand on the NEC.
