This universe, a few years back, on the 5-somethingish Montauk train out of Hunterspoint Avenue. Not the Cannonball, though.

We ended up crawling from Bethpage to Babylon thanks to some manner of disruption but no one was particularly loud or obnoxious.

I did have the miserable experience of being stuck in a bilevel filled to capacity with drunk idiots (some of whom were underage), but that wasn't on a Friday Montauk train or, for that matter, on the LIRR at all— it was on Coaster, en route to San Diego. Not sure what day of the week it was.

Not enough slots into NYP to route these trains all into the city, even with an ample supply of dual modes to provide service. Why the LIRR decided to only DM half it's new locomotive purchase beats me.

They've run them out of Penn since the C1s in the 90s...

The first train pair was run with C1s: 605 (7:20 AM arrival in Penn from Port Jefferson) and 660 (4:49 departure from Penn to Port Jefferson).
Then when the C3s came in they added train 615/668 (Port Jeff), 503/564 (Oyster Bay), and a pair for the Montauk branch (I *think* this was in 2000 or 2001).
Then they quietly replaced the C1s with C3s for 605/660.

And other than special events or weekend Ronkonkoma line reroutes via Babylon, they haven't added to the dual mode schedule until this change to the Cannonball.

Why switch from DC to diesel right after the tunnel. Why not run all the way to Babylon on DC?

2 cars' worth of shoes drawing enough power to haul 14 cars (12 + engines) around = high current = arcing = high risk of fire.

They've always been able to, they are designed within the clearances of Penn and the Esst River Tubes.

Yep, the C1's ran with rebuilt FL9's (aka Starships FL9AC's)! 605, and 660 were both Port Jeff based crews, and I knew both engineers that ran it (Ken in the AM, and Gary in the PM). When the DM30AC's took over all runs, Train 2734 (now 2738), 2737 was the original Speonk-Penn Run started in the November 8, 1999 Schedule, and to supplement 2733 was added in 2006 as a very early AM run (Jamaica Storage Yard Crew which deadheads the equipment out early).
Oyster Bay was added in 2000 (503-564), Extra PJ Run (615-658) was also added in the November 8, 1999 schedule, but did not start until December, 1999-January, 2000. As the DM30AC's came in, the Dual Mode Runs did start!
Now with the Cannonball, all being done here was the terminals were changed, but it always (except for the 2009 inaugural run which used a DE30AC on each end due to reliability issues) had a DM30AC on each end!

My understanding is the reliability issue. If one of them takes a crap while switching modes that far out east, it takes forever to get a replacement consist to cover the service. If it happens near Jamaica, not as big a deal.
