Massapequa pocket track |
|
|
Posted by Joe on Mon May 20 10:32:16 2013 Over the past few days, several news stories have appeared concerning the rehabilitation of Massapequa station on the LIRR. The price tag was given as $40 million in some reports, $20 million in others. The explanation may be in Newsday's 5.18.2013 article by Alfred Castillo, "LIRR station to get face-lift." Not just a face-lift! One paragraph states:Half of the $40 million will go toward building a pocket track between the existing tracks. The pocket track will allow more trains to start out at the station, increasing train frequency and giving riders a better change of getting a seat in the morning. --- Great! Each morning one eastbound deadhead from the city passes the Wantagh interlocking and rests on Track 2 long enough for the engineer to walk through the train and become a westbound, Train 1103 I think. Each afternoon Train 1050 drops its last passengers in Wantagh and moves over to Track 1 for reversal. Both moves have windows allowing the walk-through, but a pocket track between Massapequa and Massapequa Park should help keep those trains out of traffic. I suspect that there is enough room for the 3rd track already, as the tracks are parallel for the short run between Massapequa and Massapequa Park. Joe |

There is indeed plenty of space between the east and west bound tracks between Massapequa and Mass park for a pocket track. There might be a little issue with a short water bridge there, however. Other than that, it's easily done. |

If any station the MTA rail system needs a third pocket and platformed track it's Southeast. The Rush hour jams and also when the Mini Bomb from Wassic is loading or unloading the next southbound Mu train to GCT and an arriving one from GCT create quite a bottleneck. |

The Wassaic shuttles usually lay over in the yard, unless it's a really quick turnaround. The big problem at Southeast is that all MU's have to reverse direction to go into the yard. That takes time. |

What happens with the Northbounds is sometimes the s/b mini comes in 5-10 mins late and the MU has to wait 4 the connection. That leaves the n/b trains arriving from GCT waiting south of the interlocking until the s/b leaves. the mini waits until the N/B arrives at the station b4 it heads to the yard. |

The westbound train might be 1021, which leaves Wantagh at 7:48 AM. I often see a train resting east of Wantagh around 7:45 AM if I am passing by car on Sunrise Highway. The pocket track is one thing that will allow some of the increased capacity afforded by East Side Access to be used. |

Lots of times trains start out of Babylon Yard, or deadhead from Hillside, or West Side Yard, then head back west to its starting revenue point! And even there are times when crews will take it from westerly points as a revenue run out to Babylon, and return back as a deadhead to its starting revenue point towards Penn, or Atlantic! Obviously on the PM Rush, it's the opposite of what I mentioned! |

If that train has a good, fast, efficient crew, they can quickly change ends, knock out the brake test and get moving without little if any delay to the railroad. Most dispatchers and RTCs like a good fast turn!! |

Do you do a Class I when first taking a train out of the yard for its first run? That's what we do. Soon as the train is made up and charged for about 10 minutes, we do the Class I. Sometimes during the operations of the day we need to add a car that's when we do the Class 2. |

This morning, work crews were beginning to block the west sidewalk on Broadway, Massapequa, where a stairway comes down from an unusual between-tracks walkway from the west end of the station platform. So work begins!--- At the same time nearby, Adirondack Trailways to Kingston and Albany was loading its second and final trip of the day at 9:15 a.m. $51 one-way. |

Posted by Joe on Thu Jun 13 11:18:44 2013, in response to Massapequa pocket track, posted by Joe on Mon May 20 10:32:16 2013. This morning, Thursday, June 13, 2013, I took a look at morning boardings at Massapequa. No surprises. It's a twelve-car platform, and the west four car lengths are now closed. Westbound trains stop at their regular markers, and the barricade across the platform is at the 8-car mark. The sign there promises completion of the station work by August 2015.--- Eastbound, the former 8-car and 10-car markers are bagged. New 10-car and 8-car markers are rather close to the east end of the station, maybe within the length of a single car. A friend explains that some eastbound passengers ignore the repeated warnings to move forward (out of cars 9 thru 12) and then learn that those cars really don't open at Massapequa. Then other travelers must wait for them to walk through. As it is, the eastbound local schedule has been padded for years. --- A worker said the west canopies, where the platform is closed, will be removed soon. On the east end, the escalator was not working today. It, too, is scheduled for removal soon, before replacement. |
