Probably not. D types, SIRT cars and R-1/9s all had AMUE brake systems and both WH and GE electrical systems yet could not MU with each other yet WH and GE R-1/9s could run in the same train. Both WH and GE IRT Lo-Vs also could MU with each other but not with the Steinways which had different gearing.

I don't see how that element of their operation indicates it is an interurban as opposed to a commuter rail line.

Glad I found it. What did you think about the bit about government giving a nod to the trucking industry even way back then, not having them under the auspices of the state Public Service Commission?

The only remnant of that lost era is the Iowa Traction Railroad.

That is the exact location where CP 109 is about to be constructed. Work has already well begun, several crossovers already in place (but locked top prevent the points from activating).

If you would have panned the camera left from where the photographer shot that photo, right up above would be the Third Avenue El.

IINM, Progressive Rail wants to "supplement" the electric ops with diesel. Hope they stick to their promise to keep the electrics running . . . they'd be out of their heads not to, especially if fuel prices start to climb again.

Let me absorb this one bite at a time.
Iron to Iron, a set of R-1/9's could tow a set of "D" types, or SIRT cars.
However they could NOT MU, that is both types could not be under power, only one.
Could a "GENDER BENDER" coupling be exchanged so the electronics to line up, or would there still be voltage differences for the two systems, and in some instances, not at all.

Yes, Iron to Iron a set of R-1/9's could tow a set of D-Types or anything else for that matter. I recall when the AB Standard Museum Cars, towed a dead diesel to Coney Island Yard and did that turn a few heads.

OTOH, BART cuts cars at Fremont as evening rush ends deadheading them to S Hayward yard then operating the shorter train in revenue service. CTA used to add cars from the 61st St yard by spotting them at the S end of 61St station. The SB from Howard would pull up do station dwell then couple up and the new crew would take over.

All the AMUE equipment that had H type drawheads could couple iron and AIR. All IRT cars with J type drawheads could couple iron and AIR. Due to the different angles of the air lines between J and H couplers, if an R-9 were to couple to a Lo-V, the tappets on the R-9's H coupler would be damaged so those types could only couple iron to iron.

R9s, LoVs, Ds, ME-1s and ABs all have electrically equivalent MU control
and electric braking systems. They use the same voltage. The
differences are in the physical presentation of the trainline pins.
One would have to either change the electric portion on one of the cars
at the mating point to line up the pins, or make some kind of adapter
cable.

How many active pins do/did the "D" Type Triplexes have?

I also neglected to mention that unlike the R-1/9s and SIRTs, the D types had their door control circuits in a separate jumper rather than in the electric portion. Oddly, this practice was even used on the Multis even though they were newer than the R-1s which already had door circuits in the electric portions.

Museum trains have been run in service with some odd connections, such as D types being towed by locomotives, R9s operating with BUs. But
unless these things are trying to hold down rush hour service, there is
little need to actually get them to MU.

That is the former East Bay Electric interurban service. Actually ran on the lower deck of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge into Transbay Terminal. Ceased operation in 1941. Their passenger cars were among the first to have 3-2 seating, as well; one car seated 116 pax.
