I've been on all the revenue trackage, as well as Bergen Lower, and also Old South Ferry and the Nassau cut before those were discontinued. Once, thanks to a GO and again on a fantrip, I got to ride from Bowling Green to South Ferry and then up the 7th Avenue line. Haven't done the Malbone curve, Hammels Wye, City Hall Lower, 9th Avenue lower, or the connection from the 63rd Street Line to the Broadway BMT.

Check out 148th / Lenox.

Other than that, you are missing little (as far as the subway is concerned).

Get going!

The D from Bay 50th to Coney Island provides some scenery (though it was always best with the RFW, no longer available).

Definitely get back to the Rockaways when they are back to normal. The flats is still a good ride, even without a RFW, but the RFW adds a lot (I think R32s still run there over the summer).

The 1 north of 96th provides you the only outdoor sections on Manhattan island (besides bridges from Brooklyn).

The 5 to Dyre is something different. And the 6 has some interesting sections around Westchester Square.

The SIR. . .eh. . .if you've seen a few stations, you've seen them all, though Tottenville is interesting in that the train ends footsteps from the bay.

I might add that while I don't know if Sandy has changed the speeds, the express ride on SIR (non-stop from St. George to Great Kills) is definitely worth it!!! 50+ MPH in an R46 and no slowdowns when passing stations.

Yes, I mean terminals. I realize many non-terminal stops don't have a free crossover. I also realize this is an issue that only railfans care about. Otherwise, why ride to a terminal if you don't plan to leave the system there?

Most of the trains that terminated at 145 St terminated on the S/B track 1 so most of the time you could remain on the train and go back. During the rush, trains that would lay up in 148 St Yd would usually terminate on tk 4 which would require you to exit the high wheel and cross over the street to the S/B side. You weren't left outside of a fare control as such but there was no way to enter the N/B platform at 145 just as there is no entrance facility at 238/Bway.

Back in the 70s & 80s it was not common but it also was not unheard of for a train to be re-routed through a yard. Once there was a blockage at Grant Ave. I was on a Southbound A train going to Rockaway Blvd. The train went from Euclid Ave into Pitkin Yard, changed ends and came out at Hudson St. I also remember as a customer and wile working in Jamaica Yard, trains bypassing 75th Ave and Union Tpke by looping through the wash track in Jamaica Yard.

I wonder if any here have had similar rides.

I neglected to mention that I don't recall riding the 3 Av el Bronx Pk brach but I did ride the old West Farms Bronx Pk branch from 177 St. Although technically not a part of the "subway" system per se, I have not yet ridden the SIRT between Grant City and Tottenville. I also made it to the Nassau loop between Chambers St and the south side of the Manny B as well as the original straight trackage from Canal St lower and the north side Manny B tracks pre Chrystie configuration and of course the former Manhattan bound 14 St Line tracks over Snediker Av.

For a brief period in the late 1970s/early 1980s, there was a dedicated track and platform in Westchester Yd (#6) where passengers who used the park and ride lot could entrain in the AM rush and detrain in the PM rush.

It would be a much shorter list if I can tell you where I have been rather than where I haven't.

Also, there are some lines I have not traveled for a long time and their designations and routes may have changed since I last rode them.

(2) - Mott Haven (149th/Grand Concourse) to Atlantic Avenue
(3) - Penn Station to Atlantic Avenue
(4) - Burnside Avenue to Atlantic Avenue
(5) - Pelham Parkway to Atlantic Avenue
(6) - 96th Street to Brooklyn Bridge
(7) - Entire line
(A) - 59th Street to Far Rockaway but not Lefferts Blvd
(B) - 59th Street to 79th Street on the West End BMT
(C) - 86th Street to Jay Street/Boro Hall
(D) - 161st Street - River Avenue to Kings Highway on the Brighton BMT
(E) - Sutphin Boulevard to WTC
(F) - 179th Street to Kings Highway
(G) - 71st Continental to Hoyt Schermerhorn
(J) - Sutphin to Broad Street
(L) - 1st Avenue to Union Square
(M) - Lawrence Street to DeKalb Avenue
(N) - 71st-Continental Avenue to Lexington Avenue - 59th
(Q) - 47th-50th Rockefeller Center to West 4th Street
(R) - 71st-Continental Avenue to Whitehall Street
(S)(IRT) - Grand Central to Times Square
(BMT) - Prospect Park to Park Place (before the line was rebuilt)
(IND) - Never
(W) - Never
(Z) - Used to ride this from Sutphin during the J/Z skip-stop era.

I think something was done to the Jamaica Yard that made the outer loop to be not capable of revenue service.
It had been capable for the M/M to just go around the loop, and not have to change ends.
This was probably a hold over from the first Worlds Fair and the temporary route the IND had to it.
I don't know if this was the "wash" track.
Back in the day, the R1/9's did not get a wash externally.

Nothing was done to the track. From time to time, yard tracks are classified as main line for certain moves. Then the rules change. I've seen trains with customers loop Jamaica Yard to avoid either 75th Av or Union Tpke.

I'm pretty sure I've been to every terminal, though I had to fly in for the day to cover the last one I missed (207th St, also had to cover 63rd St and Archer Ave). I may not have actually seen Steinway St, 46th St and Northern Blvd on the Queens Blvd line, but since I have been on the whole Queens Blvd line at least on the express tracks, I'm not that worried about it. Just to be on the safe side, I will ride the local between Roosevelt and Queens Plaza the next time I'm in NYC. Maybe by then, I'll have to cover the SAS and Javits extension (as you can see, I have no immediate plans to visit NYC) :)
