They should make an ad hoc HOV lane from Bridgeport to Fairfield Metro exit on I-95 and keep the buses pumping.

Which indicate to me they have a pretty good idea of what caused it, or the lawyers and engineers would still be at it.

No. All it means is that they have collected perishable evidence from the wreck site. They will now go over the cars and adjacent infrastructure with a fine tooth comb to see what else it is that they may see. They will now examine those cars in detail and reconstruct all of the forces involved in the accident, and the sequence of events.

They have so far as I know, not ruled anything out yet. But an examination of the ground, its moisture, its stability especially with the adjacent tracks and ballast removed as it was.

LOOK under every leaf, every scrap of metal, examine how it was deformed and by what. There is a LOOONNNNG way to go on this investigation, and much of it is done in doors at the drafting table, with paper, pencil and computer.

And, Yes, the NTSB knows how vital this rail link is to the area and how important it is to have trains running again as soon as possible.

But you do need to remove the cars before you can continue to inspect the track and roadbed structure.

So go ROAR on that.

No. Not by a long shot. All they did was examine perishable evidence, and make photographs of every thing within one mile.

They have begun to gather evidence, Once the cars are moved they will be back to examine the road bed very carefully.

THEN they will take all of this information back to Washington and examine it, literally for months.

Once they have reached their conclusions they will cast their report in Government Speak (another month at least)...

It is only just begun!

I must ask an elementary question. On which two tracks were the trains running, as two were out of service? I don't recall how tracks are numbered along there, presumably 1 and 2 in the center and 3 and 4 on the outside, but please confirm the ordinary track numbering. In recent weeks, have the passengers been using temporary bridges to board trains at the nearby station?
Thanks.
Joe

I saw the video on Ch.4 news tonight. The cars look worse for wear, now that they are separated. I don't think the cars with the worse damage can be repaired.

Unless they can remove an entire side of the car body and replace it with a new side. But will it be worth it cost and labor wise ?

Thank You!

I was commenting on the Trains.com forum on this and I told them that there were no switches in the area. They were thinking a picked switch.

I Googled the whole area between Fairfield and Bridgeport, not knowing the exact location of the incident from the aerials. But I assured myself of what I had said and so said it again, telling them to go look at the visuals themselves.

Both 9246 and 9247 are total losses. Perhaps replacements will be built, but those two are gone. 9193 is also likely a total loss, unless they can figure out how to fix her nose.
