Does anyone know what type of MetroCard this is?

I know about the regular MetroCards and the Single Ride Cards, but I have never heard about this card? Did they change the name of the Single Ride ticket to a 2 Trip MetroCard without telling anyone or is this valid for two trips and two transfers? Does anyone know what this is and what it costs and if the dollar surcharge applies?

It says right on the card that it is valid for transfers. I suspect that this may have been a promotional metrocard that was given out for some reason, such as to convention-goers or the like. It obviously is not anything like the wild nonsensical story you came up with ("Did they change the name of the Single Ride ticket to a 2 Trip MetroCard without telling anyone"). Why would you even suggest that?

I ran 2-card metrocard through Google and found out that it's part of the reduced fare program. If you qualify, but don't get a reduced fare metrocard you can pay by cash. Here's the explanation from the MTA site:

How to pay with cash

When you pay with cash, you must present an acceptable form of identification (ID). Show your ID to a subway Station Agent or Bus Operator. Accepted forms of ID are: a NYC Department of Aging ID card, Medicare card (Medicaid not accepted), Access-A-Ride ID card, MTA Reduced-Fare ID card (pre-1995).

Follow these instructions for riding the subway or bus:

In the Subway: Show your authorized ID to a station agent and pay the full $2.50 fare, and you will be issued a Reduced-Fare, Round-Trip MetroCard. One trip will be deducted for each use ($1.25 per ride) and the $1.00 new card fee does not apply. Please note that paper return-trip tickets will no longer be issued, but current paper return-trip tickets will be honored until further notice.

This 2-trip MetroCard will be accepted at all subway stations, local buses and Staten Island Railway. It cannot be refilled, is non-negotiable, non-transferable and non-redeemable.

Note: Until further notice, Reduced-Fare customers whose employers provide transit benefits via a debit card must continue to purchase their MetroCard at the MetroCard Vending Machines and then visit the station booth to obtain a paper return-trip ticket.

For a more convenient way to use your transit benefits, we encourage you to get a Reduced-Fare MetroCard which can be refilled at MetroCard Vending Machines using your transit benefits debit card; or sign up for the EasyPay Reduced-Fare MetroCard and link your transit benefits card to the account.

Thank you. So in other words, this card more or less replaces the paper return ticket used by seniors. I will pass this along to the person who asked me this.

No. It was not a promotional metrocard. HeyPaul provided the answer.

To answer your question, I think that the term "Single Ride" is misleading since it includes a transfer and could be two rides. That's why I thought perhaps they changed the name. I think calling it a Single Trip ticket would be more accurate.

Before I respond to the individual who asked me the question, I want to be sure. Someone on BusChat stated that is issued for everyone at "out of vendor sales".

So my question is if it is for the reduced fare and is non-transferable, why doesn't the card indicate that?

The two trip card for Reduced-Fare qualifying customers is not the one pictured in BrooklynBus' post. It's this card:

I think the card is one that is given out by social-service agencies for people to use to come in for interviews and such (and return therefrom).

Thsnks. That makes sense. But we still have several different opinions regarding the picture I posted. So we are back to square one. The explanation about the card given out by social services agencies seems to make the most sense, not the one for medicare recipients.

I'm not exactly sure what the two trip card is for either. There's also this card, which is identical to a Single-Ride ticket, but I don't know where it can be obtained (Maybe from an MVM?):

As I posted on Buschat:
I believe it to be the replacement for the "$4.50" card which some doctors gave out to Medicaid recipients as reimbursement for their trip to the doctor. A friend got one from his doctor. Used it and gave the empty to me. Now, that's a friend! His original non insurance status was changed to a health insurance associated with Medicaid. Its the income thing. He gets the card. In my office we are required to give them out also, but there are stipulations so not all doctors participate.

I think that the term "Single Ride" is misleading since it includes a transfer and could be two rides.

But there are no free transfers for Single Ride tickets so it is what it says it is.

Single Ride ticket – $2.75
(No Reduced-Fare)
Sold at vending machines only.
Must be used within 2 hours;
no transfers included.

I read that but could they have also been used for other purposes? Were these have also been used during the school bus drivers strike, for example, when cards were given out to parents and children?

You always used to be able to get a bus-to-bus transfer with a single-ride ticket. You generally had to ask the bus driver (on the first bus) for a transfer ticket. I doubt that they have eliminated that possibility, there certainly was no announcement to that effect. So "no transfers included" probably should say "no bus-to-subway or subway-to-bus transfers included".

The single-ride tickets have never made much sense. Is there still two-ride ($5.00) minimum to get a Metrocard? With the new $1.00 per card fee, there is even less reason than ever to have such a minimum. Maybe there isn't: $5.00 is now the minimum to get the 5% bonus. Since they put it that way, it suggests that Metrocards can be bought with less on them, there just won't be a bonus. So now someone without a Metrocard could get a SingleRide card for $2.75 (that doesn't allow bus/subway transfers) or a Metrocard (with $2.50 on it) good for one ride, including such a transfer, for $3.50.

You can refill a MetroCard by less than $5 and get no bonus. The purchase minimum is still two rides and therefore all new purchases get the bonus.
