TWU advises T/Os to enter stations slowly

"Attention Train Operators: Enter Stations with CAUTION!

In the interest of safety, enter every station as if there is a pair of yellow lanterns at the entrance. Slow down, blow your horn, and proceed with caution. Preventing a 12-9, and saving yourself the emotional trauma and potential loss of income that go with it, is worth a few extra minutes on your trip.

If you are asked where you lost your time, say you were operating safely to prevent 12-9s. If a supervisor hassles you because of your safe operation, call the TWU at 718-694-4212 and 718-694-4168 (RTO)."

There is a problem, however between RESPONSIBLE unionism and FRIVOLOUS unionism and the courts may very well rule against the union on this one especially if the unions representing LIRR, M/N, PATH and other transit systems' workers don't go along with it!

Might want to check out the TWU site ... there might be some sort of bulletin in play here, they're insisting that folks follow everything they were taught in schoolcar down the line. I'm guessing there's more to this story than is out there at the moment.

You guys know the drill, anything affecting running tome is hateful by the public. My septa MFSE takes 39 minutes from end to end, we never make it.Usually we do it in 41-42 minutes, somebody holds a door open at a stop, or other problems. It's a tricky business.Slowing down entering stations will add many minutes to each run.

BART has done the blow the horn routine pretty much from day one. At the time, except for those of us from somewhere else, subways were a new experience. Depending on deceleration techniques, slowing down more gradually to enter might not be a bad thing for brake wear.

The TWU is looking out for its members. They are the ones who pay the dues, not the riding public.

I'd tell them to barrel on in and the heck with the 12-9s, except hat is such a trauma to its own members!

They want fast trains and they want safe rides. Is it possible?

The LION will not go down there to collect the remains until the power is off and proper flagging is in place. US LIONS HAVE ONION RULES TOO.

Yep, same for LACMTA Red/Purple Lines. Unlike BART, those horns on the Bredas are LOUD. Some have said it's because the entire Red/Purple lines are underground, but the BART horns are not that loud in the subway portions.

Probably why in the movie "Speed", they susbstituted a BART horn for the actual Red Line horn.

Actually, entering the stations would probably increase brake wear since the dynamic and regenerative brakes which are the principal means of slowing the train, gradually fade out at lower speeds allowing the brake shoes to apply to the wheels much sooner and for a longer duration.

That would depend on the actual speed when entering the station. On the older cars - up to R-68A, dynamic fades at between 5-7 MPH. On the new tech cars it's a bit lower.

OK, but in any event, entering stations at a lower speed would probably not save brake shoe wear.

It won't save brake shoe wear at all. It could make it worse if T/O's go to the extreme and come to a stop at the entering signal - blow the horn and then proceed into the station.

Are they anything like WMATA's horns, which I often hear as the train is entering the station at random, presumably if the T/O thinks someone is too close to the edge of the platofrm?

Billbklyn, I was trained to come into station at the Posted Speed. So if the station is marked at 35MPH and I have a 12-9. As long as I put the train in Emgicy the right way in a timely manner, I am covered. So I do Jest Exactly as I was told to do. I not creeping into station because my union say it would help, Ya I know a few people who has 12-9's doing 10MPH into station because of Flagging on the tracks. People who was to jump will just jump later.

If the TA changes the rules then I must follow.

Have to say, I do agree with this initiative. It has the potential of working, but with the craziness of the world (which no real initiative will ever change) and the location on the platform where a jump or push occurs, 12-9s will be every bit as much as risk as it was before. And this doesn't account for the several instances where trespassers in the tunnels were hit. It is a step, but let's see how much this step will achieve in terms of reduced likelihood of additional fatalities from 12-9s.

Although, in the "olden" days, guys used to come cruising into stations in the days when speeds were faster, and I never heard of any higher count in 12-9s, especially fatalities, than now. In fact I have heard of more now (old timers from the TA please do step in with your knowledge about how more often the 12-9 has occurred in those days when speeds were faster as opposed to now. Thanks!!)
