Where on the NYC subway have you NOT been?

I was riding home after dropping off my car on Northern Blvd on the R train, and it occurred to me that I'd NEVER actually taken the R from Queens Plaza to 59th/Lex. I don't ride Queens Blvd that often, and when I have it has always been on the E, F, M, G but never the R or any other line that went to Bway. Add to that that I've never been out to 148th/Lenox, never past Bedford Pk on the 4 (went to Lehman), never past Pennsylvania Ave out to New Lots (my grandmother lived there until 1966, it was that long ago), and never out to Parson/Archer on either branch as that opened long after my railfanning days were over. Oh, and never out to Lefferts, when I've gone that way it was always to Rockaway.

I've also never been through the City Hall loop, and I was at Brooklyn Bridge yesterday after a visit to J&R and was going to ask if it was OK, but then decided to just go home. I've been through SF loop though from Bowling Green.

So, anybody here still have missing pieces?

The Nostrand Ave branch of the 2/5.

The Lenox/148+145st stops on the (3)

The Nassau st subway below Fulton st (so no Broad st).

That's really about it. All three are pretty much underground so really it's not something that burns me so-to-speak. There is some LIRR territory I've yet to fan (Oyster Bay, Greenpoint) as well as a whole ton of NJT (basically everything except the NEC and NCJL + RVL btw NWK and Raritan). I'll probably chip away at that over the summer if I can.

It is OK to stay on the 6 train and ride thru the loop (I recommend the 8th or 9th car). That section is considered as "revenue trackage".

The recorded announcement states: "This is the last downtown stop on this train. The next stop is Brooklyn Bridge on the uptown platform"

As for me, I have been to just about every place one can go where the public is allowed that exist today (and some that no longer exist). I have been to some places where the public isn't allowed (I had permission, of course) such as the Coney island yard facilities, the 207th St facility, the 39th St yard, and the abandoned 91st St, 18th St, Worth St stations, the Brooklyn Bridge side platform ,the City Hall Loop station, the SF inner loop station (both when it was in use and afterward), the side platforms at Hoyt-Schermerhorn.

Missing pieces? 76th St (if it really does exist), The upper level station at Roosevelt Av (I have only seen it in a Mark Feinman video), the South 4th St station (I have seen pics), the list can go on and on.

and the lower level stations at City Hall (R train) and 9th Av (Brooklyn).

I think the only stations I have never traveled through are 145th and 148th Sts. on the Lenox Ave. line.

But I have been on the Bronx portion of the 3rd Ave. El., the Culver Shuttle, the Myrtle Ave. El south of Broadway, the Nassau Loop, and the Bowling Green/South Ferry shuttle.

I've ridden the entire system, that the public is allowed to ride, IIRC I did the Rock Park shuttle last.

Even the connector track out in the Rockaways that the (H) line uses!

I also ridden the entire electric portions of the LIRR & MNR. (Except for the Belmont Park branch)

Grand Central Tower just south of 42nd Street and tunnel view of approaching uptown #6 locals
18th Street (IRT #6)
Abandoned portions of Brooklyn Bridge express platforms, southern part of the station, view of approaching #4/5 trains from Fulton St and #6 trains from City Hall Loop

2nd Avenue Subway under Chinatown. 750 foot section near Grand Street.
Runbys of in-service trains also found on the video

Including the CULVER SHUTTLE, the MYRTLE AVENUE LINE and the THIRD AVENUE LINE in the Bronx.

LION has also been on the 3rd Avenue Line in MANHATTAN, but only as a little cub and him knows not what stations were visited.

missed out on maybe a couple stations on Third Ave at the outer end in the Bronx (dim memory) Still haven't done IRT east of(RR south?) Rogers Jct. Not sure about Jamaica 168--I did travel to an LIRR Station to photograph a fan trip via some subway route in 67(?), Not sure I have been all the way on the Pelham line. OTOH, did lower Myrtle, City Hall Loop, SF-BG Shuttle, SIRT before the line relocation around New Dorp, think I did Culver shuttle just once.

I have been everywhere. The last segment I rode for the first time was the Pelham line, in 1989. That being said, there are parts of the system I haven't ridden in years. Just about all the IRT in the Bronx outside the Jerome Ave line I haven't been on since the last MOD trips in 2004. I rode the New Lots line ONCE in 1987 and did not return again until an MOD trip in 2003. In fact, the MOD trips afforded me an excuse to see parts of the IRT I hadn't ridden since the early 90's beforehand and haven't ridden since.

The 3rd Av. El below 149th St, the Polo Grounds Shuttle and the Fulton St. El (from Rockaway Av. east) were in existence during my early life, but I was not yet a railfan. I've also never ridden a Nassau Loop train via the Manny B, nor the Culver Line before the IND took it over. Not sure if I ever rode a (14) between Eastern Pkwy on the (15) and Atlantic Av (16). Never rode BMT multis.

What sucks is all those rush hour (E) to 179th use the local track in the PM Rush... Some (F) train lay up on that express track before the first (E) to 179th gets there.

So yea its hard to catch a ride on a in service train on that track, I guess everyone just gotta wait whenever the Hillside local track has to be taken OOS for a G.O.

Next Month there's a G.O where the CI bound (F)'s will pass though Bergen Lower level... another part of the system I can add to my list

The cool thing about that track is that, even though the junction with Archer Ave was there, there were no speed limits. Trains flew through Van Wyck, it was some of the fastest track out there. Particularly later in the day, when the E and F weren't crush loaded and running at max capacity.

I don't even recall going through any of the connections to the 42nd Street Shuttle, the connections between the Broadway el and the Canarsie Line at Broadway Junction, or the track at which the Malbone Street wreck occurred, though opportunities ride a train through any of that are few and far between, if they happen at all!

When that FS that lays up on that Malbone wreck track to end its day, it runs in service on that track, so its quite common, like at least twice a day. Or at least that was the case.

Whenever they have that G.O with the (L) line ending at Broadway Junction they sometimes end on the (J) line platform at the station. The connector doesn't have catwalks N/B IIRC, I always wondered what happened if a train went BIE on it?

I never made it to Rockaway Av since I rode Fulton on a Sunday when the service operated out of E/Pky. I also was on the S/B platform at Gold St (Myrtle Av) which is no longer there but have yet to set foot on the N/B platform which is still in place. One infuriating thing about 145th/Lenox as a terminal is that it left you outside of fare control, like the PATH at Newark. So you had to cross over and pay another fare to get back on.

Was that the only station ever like that in NYCT?

And in late 1960, I rode an MS on the Canarsie Line from Broadway Jct to Rockaway Parkway and back. I was a mere lad of six.

In my years of fanning the subways, I managed to visit all of the revenue routes and branches at least once [except the fallen branches 3rd Av Bronx, Culver Shuttle, Myrtle Ave-they went down before '76 when I turned 18 and became an adult. I was a kid living in Queens from '68 to '70 when all of these lines were operating but like most kids, I was confined to my block.].

Of all of the subway routes, the least used by me were the G, L, and M[Myrtle Ave portion]. I remember going to Lenox Terminal [3] once, and I took the A to 207th St when the Bx12 SBS opened up.

South Ferry inner loop and Hammel's Wye come to mind right away. I've gone through South Ferry from Bowling Green and on up the West Side as well as from Rector around the loop up the East Side.

I've covered three out of the four possible local interconnections south of W. 4th. The only one I haven't done is from Spring St. to W. 4th lower level.

Haven't covered either of the original connections still in place at the Times Square-Grand Central shuttle. This past July, I rode on the IND old timers from Court St. through Hoyt-Schermerhorn.

I covered everywhere that I hadn't been a few years ago. Since then, the new South Ferry station has opened, so I will have to visit it. Even though I have been on the Queens Blvd line several times, I'm not sure that I've been on the local segment between 36 St and Northern Blvd (where the local tracks diverge from the express via Steinway St and Broadway), so I will cover that the next time in NYC as well.

As far as trackage no longer with us, I've done the Culver Shuttle and the J to 168 St. Never got to the lower Myrtle or 3rd Av el (Bronx only, south of 149 St went away several years before I was born). MJ couldn't be helped, never had reason to be on it, and it went away before I was old enough to railfan (though I was riding trains solo in 1969, but usually only to go over to my grandmother's house near Newlots Av on the then 2 (now 3 and 4). 3rd Av el was my own fault, as I was a teenager by then and was old enough to railfan solo. Didn't help that I was living in Illinois when it shut down in 1973, and was only in NYC in the summer and at Christmas time. Didn't do Hammels wye, but back when I railfanned the Rockaways (during winter regents time in 1975), it wasn't in use during the daytime. Rode the A to Far Rockaway (previously, I had only gone as far as Straiton), then up to Broad Channel, got the HH to Rockaway Park. At that time, I thought that I had covered the whole system as it existed in early 1975, forgetting that I had never been to 207th St on the A! And I was on the A at that time, coulda just stayed on...actually, I might not have had time, anyway, I took care of that 31 years later, better late than never. :)

Maybe at this point, I'll wait until the 7 extension opens and cover that.

I haven't ridden:

The Sunset Limited (at all)
The Heartland Flyer (at all)
The Texas Eagle (St. Louis to San Antonio)
The Pennsylvanian (Harrisburg to Pittsburgh)
The Vermonter (Waterbury to St. Albans)
The Lake Shore Limited (Albany to Boston)
The Northeast Regional (Richmond to Norfolk)
The Cascades (Everett to Vancouver, BC)
The Downeaster (Portland to Brunswick)
The Missouri River Runner (at all)
The Michigan services (at all)
The Illinois services (Galesburg to Quincy)
The San Joaquin (Sacramento to Stockton and Hanford to Bakersfield)
The Ethan Allen Express on the Rutland branch line.
Any miles through Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas that aren't covered by the Auto Train, the Crescent, and Tri-Rail.

Obviously, those with the advantage of age will be able to name many routes long discontinued. My discontinued mileage list is extraordinarily small, and the biggest route on it is (potentially) slated to reopen next spring anyway.

If you rode on the Franklin Shuttle where would you have gotten on or off if not at the end.

LION likes the Eastern Parkway station (with its transfer to the IRT. It is a subway station, but north of there, eh an even south of there it is a very beautiful railroad.

"the new South Ferry station has opened, so I will have to visit it. "

That may be quite a while. It was severely damaged due to Hurricane Sandy (flooded all the way up the escalators).

I don't think there is a definite time frame as to when the station will be reopened as there is just too much work that has to be done (probably just short of a complete rebuild).

The only place I have NOT been is around City Hall loop, though I have been on the platform at City Hall (when they had it open on the 100th anniversary).

I have been to a number of places no longer in service:
- 3rd Ave El in the Bronx
- Myrtle between Bridge Jay and Broadway
- Culver Shuttle including 9th Ave Lower
- Bowling Green South Ferry Shuttle

I'll add to my original post that I've been to 168th/Jamaica, the Culver shuttle and 9th Ave lower, and the Malbone tunnel.

And I thought of one other place I haven't been, from 57th/7th through to 63rd/Lex. I guess I'll have to wait until the 2nd Ave subway opens, unless I get lucky on a re-route.
