Which would you choose, the trolly, or the el, to cross over the Brooklyn Bridge?

Never realized that the tracks were at "grade" level on the BB.

What's the history here? Were there ever two levels of the bridge? Was the current motor roadway built after the fact, at a lower level than the pedestrians? What forms of transit coexisted on this bridge?

Fulton el from Atlantic Ave to Park Row; Lexington el from Park Row to Bridge St; Myrtle el from Bridge Street to Sands Street loop; 5th Ave el from Sands Street loop to Bay Ridge, where I parked my time machine. I vote els!

One Level. At either end the auto road, trolley tracks would exit, while the El tracks would head for their terminals, upper on the Brooklyn side, lower level on the Manhattan side.

I think ? ?

What year, El? I always think that 1939 would be the best year to hit:

All of the Brooklyn and most of the Manhattan Els are still operating - yes, the Sixth Ave is gone, but there ARE sacrifices!

On the Brooklyn Els, there would be a fair chance catching up with the Green Hornet, Zephyr or maybe even the Bluebird.

Brand new Multis - hold on!

Q cars right out of the shop

Brand new IRT WF cars - hell, the World's Fair itself! And take the IND WF Line back to your hotel.

oh gosh, what else - Red cars and Black cars on the H&M...not to mention Hudson Terminal, GG-1s....P54s on the Pennsy Main. Freaking Grand Central and the REAL Pennsylvania Station at the peak of their glory. All the train sheds across the river.

Not to mention tons and tons and TONS of real STEAM....everywhere! I could even ride 'home' on the O&W, and back on the Erie.

and oh yeah....TROLLEYS....EVERYWHERE :O

I assume this was taken after the el stopped running over the bridge as the trolley is using the inside tracks.

The el tracks were above the trolley tracks on both sides of the bridge. Park Row terminal was elevated and the trolleys were on street level.

Nope! There are plenty of photos around that show the configuration of both Sands St and Park Row.

1939 would be too late, Lou! I was thinking sometime prior to 11/25/35, when the truncation of Park Row began. Also, by 1939, the Sands Street loop had been closed for several years. So we would probably have to make it a few years earlier. Anyone out there know when the Sands Street loop closed?
