Or it's a really bad track fire. Either way, no J/M service between Chambers and Marcy, M's turning at 2nd Ave.

The MTA says a smoke condition started in the train tunnel between the Bowery and Essex Street Stations along Delancey Street on the Lower East Side.

Fire Department says there were two trains impacted between two stations, Bowery and Essex Street.

Both trains were able to get to a station and the passengers got out at those stations.

A lower Manhattan-bound J train with 350 passengers and a Queens-bound M train with 200 riders had to back up to Essex Street to let people out. The MTA says that took about 18 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

The smoke condition started at 2:52 p.m. The MTA says a wall mounted electrical box between Bowery and Essex Stations caught fire.

The box feeds the third rail for the J and M trains. It caused smoke in tunnel.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze without issue.

The MTA says no trains are stuck and no passengers are stuck on trains at this time.

There is limited J train service between Marcy Av and Broad St.

Downtown M trains are terminating at 2 Av.

Please expect delays in J and M train service at this time.

Customers trying to get to Brooklyn should take the A, C or L trains to Broadway Junction and then come back on the J to points in Brooklyn.

A fire at a subway station suspended service on three lines in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Friday afternoon, and sources say there's evidence it was started after someone tried to steal a copper wire underground.

Fire Department officials described the smoke as "light" Friday afternoon at the Delancey Street - Essex Street station on the Lower East Side.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesperson Charles Seaton said a J train became stuck inside a "no power area" at the Essex Street station at 2:50 p.m on Friday.

The train reversed back to the Essex St. Station and approximately 500 passengers were evacuated.

Sources told NBC 4 New York Friday night that the fire could have been sparked when a cable fell across the third rail and a track rail as someone tried to steal an underground copper wire.

The spark of electricity along the rail caused the fire and smoke condition.

Another source told NBC 4 New York that investigators think the suspected copper wire theft may be part of a larger operation, and the source said tools used for cutting were found in a closet-sized enclosure in the tunnel.

The source says it appears the theft has been going on for months, and in all, as many as two thousand feet of cable appear to be missing from the station.

Service to the J, Z and M trains were fully restored Friday night.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

The train got stuck in a no power section of the Essex Street Station, and then reversed back to the Essex Street Station? I guess it didn't have very far to go.

If power is off, how does the train reverse back to Essox St. station?

Does a train only need power to go forward, but doesn't need any to wrong rail back?

Or did the train go from a block with power to one without power, and get stuck half way between the two?
With the rear half still powered, maybe it could reverse direction?

My neighbors here in Bay ridge who own their own homes told me that there is a rash of gutter and leader theft since many of those are made of copper. It may be as investigators speculate that there is a large copper theft ring in the city.
