I rode on an R46 C train, and saw both an R32 and R42 A train (The R32 was going to the Rockaways, and the R42 was going to Lefferts). So far, the switch back has not started. |

C service is being run with R-46's this Labor Day.Think of the R-32's & their HVAC systems as being whales. They must come up to the surface for air. Running the C with R-46's is a headache in a number of ways.More cars are running up miles meaning more frequent inspections. To make service,207 & Pitkin have to keep their hold count(the number of O/S cars) down further, meaning they are probably paying OT,or worse "burying" cars until they get caught up (a B/O wiper on the 5th car of an A train isn't an issue until you cut it 4/4 for Lefferts OPTO).Additional switching personnel are required @ 168 & Euclid to relay trains in a timely manner due to the locked end doors & plug doors @ the middle.Six links ( 4 car units & not to be confused with Curly Q Links ) of R-46 have been borrowed from Jamaica, putting a similar strain on their resources. A train that could be shopped midday in the Jamaica fleet may have to wait for after the PM rush, because the Barn is unable to produce an OK replacement.Safety issues are going to the yard no matter what, but secondary things that add up will wait. Next weekend will see F's from 179 going down Fulton St,so 2 weeks is a good guess. |

Septembers have been getting warmer the last few years.WOuld 6 car C's of R46's (14 pairs of A-A or A-B sets) be unacceptable ? Could they short turn a few more rush hour F's back to King Hwy to save a train set of two ? |

IWO, you are afraid T/O would forget length of train and stop short ?Worked on the BMT decades ago: 3, 6 and 8 car Jamaica trains, and never at any particular time during rush hours was every consist on the 15 8 cars. |

To run 6 R-46's on the C would involve new Car Stop markers for theMotorman & new boards for the C/R.Between Jay St & 59th St you'd need to do 6th Ave in case of reroutes, either through GO's or blockages of service. Six car R-46's ran on the N in the late 70's to early 80's (I took slides of them ),nothing bad was known to happen. But in today's world,no one would sign off on it. |

When you said T/O you summed up the problem.Motormen took pride intheir job,T/O's need everything handed to them.If you messed up at one time,YOU took the hit & not your supervisor(s).This is not a gender but an attitude issue. |

You don't have motormen today, you have train operators. Back in the day you had a c/r board for only a maximum length train. Today, they need a board no matter what size train it is because the c/r has to point at it. Back in the day it wasn't as big of a deal as it is today if doors were opened outside a station. Sure it was wrong, but it was a slap on the wrist as long as nobody got hurt.Management has dumbed down the job. Memo's about everything except which leg to put into your pants first when you're getting dressed. |

An operator does both jobs of motorman and conductor. A motorman operates the train, a conductor handles the passenger. The TA should go back to motorman or get rid of the conductor. BTW, I believe the TA is the last system to operate a subway train with 2 people in the country. |

It should be noted that in Beijing, there are normally 2 or 3 people in the cab; one motorman and 1-2 Conductors. And 9 times out of 10, there is either an additional supervisor, or trainees in the cab as well. |

I can see a pissing contet coming in regards to full OPTO vs. no OPTO at all.Does DC Metro & Bart have platforms with reduced visibility meaning poles a few inches before the end of the platform ala IND? Does DC Metro and Bart have stations with dips in them, ala 34/6th? Does DC Metro and Bart have cars with so many doorways and door operators as NYC? If a train needs to have a door motor cut out, and there are many more per train in NYC, there would be a substantial delay as the t/o has to walk all the way back. I was on a Philadelphia Broad St. train the other day where the t/o had to go all the way back to the last car to attend to a door. If a c/r was there it would have been a shorter delay. |

Likewise, a BIE investigation would take longer since the T/O will need to walk through the train to make certain that the announcement was heard in each car before descending to the roadbed. Presently the C/R's responsibility. |
