From the Stupid Criminal Files of the NYPD (On Topic)

The NYPD sent me this little tidbit, via Facebook:

"NYPD Transit Officers recovered a loaded 9mm Bryco handgun after they stopped a man for jumping the turnstile at the Dyckman Street subway station in upper Manhattan Thursday. Officers Rene Mendez and Alberto Rivera assigned to Transit District 3 observed the man jump over the turnstile and board the southbound No. 1 train. The Officers followed him onto the train that was waiting in the station, removed the man, and recovered the loaded gun. The man, 22, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, intent to obtain transportation without payment, and criminal trespass."

So, if you Know you're carrying an illegal handgun, why call attention to yourself by jumping over a turnstile? SMH!!!

It's been that way for years. They stop a lot of people for jumping over turnstiles only to discover weapons, drugs, large sums of suspicious cash, fake IDs, and other illegal items...

"large sums of suspicious cash"

I've always wondered about that one. Why is carrying cash "suspicious" anyway? No law regulates the amount or type of cash one may have in their possession. This concept of "suspicious cash" has been used to "legally" rob people--particularly in small towns--for years. The cops confiscate the money as "drug proceeds", in the absence of any evidence whatsoever to prove the suspected source of the cash. Cash, in and of itself, is not an indicator of a crime, nor is having lots of cash on you a crime in itself. I once sold a car for cash, and was taking the train home with about $2000 on me. Does that make me a drug dealer?

Bryco pistols are just about the cheapest crappiest least reliable of all firearms. Most gunsmiths refuse to service them. They even look inferior:

No, but someone with a lot of money wouldn't generally be jumping a turnstile. Persons with no respect for laws or authority (which describes most criminals) jump turnstiles. Therefore, having an obscene amount of cash on you, in a "poor" neighborhood, after having committed a crime, makes you suspicious of larger things.

In the early 1990s, some finance types from New Jersey were caught jumping turnstiles.

If all you had are large bills, getting one token may not have been so easy. Did booth clerks accept $100 bills? Or how about riding a bus? Remember the scene in (I think) Star Trek IV?

Don't even say that kiddingly! I've had patients that actually happened to! I had one guy who was pissed, slammed his gun down on the kitchen table (at least he was attempting to maintain his weapon--he was cleaning it) and kaboom, his wife didn't have half her face anymore. This was with a legally registered Sig Sauer (IIRC).

OTOH, I also once treated a guy who was trying to rob the railroad clerk at Sutter Avenue. He shot himself in the calf trying to draw his weapon. When the cops recovered it from the scene, I'm told, it literally fell apart in their hands.

Booth clerks never officially accepted $100 bills until TA told them to for metrocards amounts over $70 sometime in the late 90's..
Unofficially, one could submit any bill. I sent in a $100 bill because that is all the person claimed he had on him, and by golly, he DID pay.

They were put out of business to to a massive judgment against them in a negligence lawsuit. There is little legitimate market for such guns as no one but criminals would consider them useful.

Dumbasses do dumbass things because they're dumbasses!!! People have been caught beating the fare while doing all kinds of other stupid s*** they might otherwise have gotten away with. I don't have details, but I heard some years ago that a guy who had escaped from Death Row in Texas or Virginia or somewhere was apprehended on the NYC Subway when he jumped the turnstile.

Basically, most street criminals are indivduals with very poor socialization, and they really don't know HOW to follow normal rules, and this guy probably couldn't have easily figured out that committing a minor offense may still provide the tip-off that you've also comitted a bigger one. He may have now learned it the hard way.

n the other hand, the lesson he may (not knowing him, I have no way of really knowing)have learned is to shoot any cop who tries to question him for anything.

Yep. an old story, really. This actually demonstrates why fare patrols are so necessary on the subway. They oftne lead to much bigger things, and may actually prevent robberies or worse that were planned for that very ride!!

As I said earlier, I think many criminals are unable to make the connection that if they're carrying contraband or have warrants, that they should call attention to themselves by fare-beating.
