Yikes. This was filmed just after my 5th birthday! Nice to see the old R40's on the B West End. This reminds me of the time I rode the 1 train from 96th to 157th, to my aunt's house with my mother, on a train of graffitied up R21's! Miss those days! As for the people in this video, someone should have told the kid to put on a shirt! Try THAT one today, without getting ticketed by the NYPD! Not to mention that other guy in a dress! Geez!

It seems to be an (N) train diverted to what was then the (B) line. Yeah, the (N) and what is now the (D) still run over each others' lines routinely. But somehow seeing it on film from a few decades ago makes me think of "The French Connection".

you can do that in 2012. It's perfectly legal to be shirtless in public. I'm not sure if there's a specific code of conduct addressing it on MTA property, but it's sure as heck legal on public streets. Even women have the right to appear topless in NYC (that's without a bra). Here's an article if you don't believe me: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/06/topless_bowery.php

During the summer of 1987 the N was almost always diverted down the B line. This prevented the J train from terminating at 9th Ave. That meant they were turned at 36th St. in a manner which would be inconceivable today.

I should elaborate that during this time there was no midday M service. They did the 2 shuttle/single track thing north of Myrtle, and extended the J south of Broad St to cover for the M here. This usually coincided with the bustitution of the J line east of either Eastern Parkway or Crescent St. Since the pre-GOH R42's did not have proper signage for this route, it usually meant they were OOS during the day, which really sucked in summer.

It's almost the reverse of what we experienced when the GOH'ed cars were put in service. Back then, this was normal and the clean cars of today evoked the strong response. The summer of 1987 was my first experience with the overhauled slants. The only other type in service before this was the R38's, which debuted in February. I still remember my first ride on one, and I did not recognize it as the older type. I thought it was a brand new car class.

No, R40's were confined mostly to the B, and occasionally on the Q. No doubt some were already off TA property being overhauled when this was filmed.

The B used to be a hodge-podge line, but once the N and R swapped northern terminals (and yards) the B used slant R40's almost exclusively for the next 10 years.
