China

I am visiting Beijing.

The subway network has been expanding rapidly, and is expected to continue to expand. By 2015 there are to be 13 subway lines plus 6 additional subway lines in the suburbs.

Most Beijing subway lines are underground, but an exception is line 13 which runs almost entirely above ground, using a pre-existing railway right-of-way and the median strip of an expressway. Line 13 has electrical supply between the tracks, so that the contact shoes are side running.

The more modern lines have platform doors.

Except on line 13, most stations have island platforms, but an exception is Haidanhuangzhuang on line 10, which is an interchange station with line 4, which has an island platform at that station.

The subway runs from about 0500 to 2300. The fare is 2 yuan, regardless of distance traveled.

Tomorrow I will catch a high-speed train to Tianjin.

I wonder how often those subway trains break down?

The Beijing subway system is extremely reliable.

The high-speed train ride from Beijing South to Tianjin South was similar to an airplane ride, but far more comfortable.

Tianjin South station is a long way from the city center, in the middle of nowhere.

Beijing South station has 22 tracks, and a very spacious concourse.

The Tianjin subway system has three lines. Due to a construction accident, one line has a gap, and runs in two parts.

Tianjin subway line 9 runs mostly on the surface, and it serves the newly developing area of Binhai. Line 9 is operated by Binhai Mass Transit, known as BMT(!).

My hotel room in Binhai overlooks line 9.

22 tracks? Are you sure it shouldn't be categorized as commuter rail? Wonder how busy that station is - probably beats anything in NY.

Beijing South Railway station is the name. It is commuter rail hub. It has 24 tracks; 13 platforms, 1 subway platform.

Thanks for the correction. My observation was that there are 22 "gates", numbered 2 through 23, but I must have missed gates 1 and 24.

Presumably the one subway platform is an island platform.

Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, Beijing is currently preparing to begin construction on not just more subway lines, but projects R1, R2, and R3. This will be an express subway, two additional tracks on what's now line 1. This will be one of the only express subways I know of outside of New York, and the only one I can think of outside of the United States.
