Since the letter "M" indicates Myrtle, K would not have been appropriate. When the threads about combining the M with the V first started appearing on this forum, I advocated A service from jamaica Ctr to Ctl via Chrystie rather that a Met to Ctl service but that was because I felt that crewing would be easier for a service that had both ends of the line approximately 12 min away from each other. It would have also given Archer Av passengers a direct ride to the 6 Av corridor. It could have conceivably been assigned the letter "K" or used the letter "V." Either one would have been acceptable and the "Z" could have been retired.

Even when the KK was running there were 4 KKs that laid up to Met in the AM. Although they should technically have been called "MMs" and the R-9s had "MM/Av of Americas Lcl" route signs the MM designation was never used.

Unfortunately, I have 1972 & 1974 Vignelli mpas, but no 1973 copy,

There wasn't one. You have the 1972 map which was the first of the Vignelli versions. This was the last map to list the KK (6Av -Jamaica) and QJ.

The next map has a copyright of 1972 (2). The new schedules went into effect on December 31, 1972 which was a Sunday. As January 1 (Monday) was New Year's Day the full effect of the service changes did not take effect until Tuesday January 2. The QJ was replaced by the J and the KK was cut back to Eastern Parkway from Jamaica and became the K. Also the M was extended to Coney Island weekdays from about 6AM to 8 PM.
The A would now run express Brooklyn during rush hours. The E would now run local in Brooklyn and terminate at Euclid Avenue and Rockaway Park. No more E trains to Far Rock.

The next map was dated and was probably issued sometime after April 28, 1973 went the 3 Avenue El was discontinued .

On a 1988 trip out the flats from Euclid to Rkwy Park, #2974, signed "H", nearly shook itself to pieces with flat wheels, and the t/o floored it going across the bay, making matters much worse for the entire train. The noise was incredible.

Yup..way before the RJ/JJ were removed..QJ extended to Coney Island..KK began in August of 68..

QJ service was problematic..at least from what my father told me..KK service was just as problematic,from many reasons..but first and foermost due to crappy trains..service being hijacked by F line supervision to cover delays in F service...gapping out Broadway Brooklyn service..often forcing QJ trains to run local...

It was the TA's own fault about the car shortage..

First ..they didnt order enough 143 to cover the eastern division...
second..they retired WAY TOO MANY CARS[400 R
10/550 R27-30-30A] and replaced them mostly with the R68/68A..WHICH WAS Nowhere near enough to cover the loss..

The SAME situation exists today..with the retirement of the 44.
The shortfall of the 160 car order[1,662 instead of the 1,700 that SHOULD have been purchased]..WHICH WILL REMAIN UNTIL the 211's are here.

This "order SHOULD by all means be placed NOW..

Brake valves were not an issue, rather a bulletin was issued in 1988 mandating a two second delay before braking after controller off. It did not help with the flat spotting. There was one test car, I am not sure if it was 3043 or 3041 that was re-equipped with J-1 relays and cast iron brake shoes. That test was not repeated

With the sagging stick railed trackage existing in the 80s, everything had the same ride quality but it was nice to get some without dead motors rolling through the Cranbury Tubes or that R10 WH motor air whine thundering over the switches north of Broad Channel. You just had to hope the reset button pulled in ALL of the overload relays when you pressed it

When R-7/9's went through East Broadway (which had fluorescent lighting for as far back as I can remember), the cars always looked brownish black.

Oh yeah. I remember taking the R-10 A on the CPW Express, and I remember the train went FAST! The train was shaking! The train must of been running over 50 MPH!!!

Best part of that trip was coming up the ramp approaching 110th St/Cathedral Parkway at full gallop! As noisy as they were, I do miss the R-10's and their original 2 tone colors.

There were the 2500s, which had box vents that made them distinctive.

I would call the other two slant and deck roof.

In architecture, an ogee is a double curve, going from convex to concave to convex. The BMT 2000-2599 didnt have a true ogee, the Multis and R10 and R12s did. IIRC, so did Stillwell cars, like on the DL&W and the NY&B.

A clerestory roof has windows or slits for the purpose of allowing light to enter. On the Standards the raised section of the roof was only for vents.

My favorite memory of the R-10 was looking out the last car as it was flying down the Fulton St express. Noisy as hell, but at least it SOUNDED fast!

Another not-so-favorite memory was when I was trying to catch a beat-up R-10 A train. I tried to stick my hand in the door, except the door cushions had been cut away, and the doors closed with my hand still there! Let's just say I yanked out my hand out really fast when I realized what was going to happen (and I never purposely stuck anything in subway doors since).

Thank heavens you were able to free your hand. There aren't many R10 videos around except for one from Jacob's Ladder and that video I found recently of the IND subway that shows both Green and Graffiti R10s in the Rockaways sometime in the mid 1980s.

The KK officially debuted on July 1, 1968, when the 57th St. station on the 6th Ave. line finally opened. The JJ and TT were both dropped on that same day. The RJ was gone by then, too.
