Dilapidated Sea Beach (N) line subway stations are dangerous - especially rotting metal staircases

Corroded and nearly 100-year-old staircases at a slew of dilapidated subway stations along the N-line are at the top of straphangers’ list of complaints about the stops.

Nine outdoor stations from Sunset Park to Gravesend have been plagued by rotting metal staircases full of gaping, rusted holes; water leaks, peeling paint and cracked walls for more than eight years, riders said.

“The ceilings are falling down and the staircases are horrendous. It’s unsafe,” said Chris Morales, 35, of Bensonhurst who walks down the corroded stairwell at the 18th Avenue station everyday to catch the N to Manhattan.

“They are unstable and shaky. It’s a major hazard. The MTA is not taking care of maintenance,” said Morales. “The ceilings are crumbling. (Debris) could hit someone on the head.”

Built in 1915 , the 97-year-old subway stations last had “full rehab work” in the 1980’s, said MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz.

“We are working on a plan to address the staircases,” said Ortiz in an email, adding that restoration on the stations from 8th Avenue to 86th Street is slated to begin in October 2014 and end in 2018.

The work “will address all structural defects at the station platform areas, including canopies, roofs, columns, back walls... platform edges...and stairways,” Ortiz said.

But State Assemblyman William Colton (D-Bensonhurst) said conditions at the stations are “in serious disrepair and dangerous” and that the rotting staircases are an “emergency. .

“They need a significant amount of structural work done and if that doesn’t get done soon we’re going to have a tragedy. Somebody will get seriously injured or killed because of the disrepair,” said Colton, adding the work needs to be “ done sooner.”

Riders said the 1980s renovation hasn’t held up.

“It’s only been getting worse,” said Bensonhurst resident Kris Nova, 23, who catches the N from the 18th Avenue stop. “There are holes all over the walls and the ceilings.” The stairs are deteriorating, she said, adding that when it rains “the entire station floods with two inches of water.”

In Sunset Park, N-line riders weren’t thrilled either.

“Everything is corroded. It’s really disgusting,” said Virginia Liao, 24, of the 8th Avenue station.

its is in so much danger the concrete embankments holding back the earth is threatening to collaspe inward, flooding the line with fill in many places.

maybe its time to put a roof over the line to reinforce the walls.

Every time they paint it, it peels away almost instantly. All that concrete has to be resurfaced or removed and replaced with something that requires less maintenance.

Sounds like people's back yards are in danger of collapse onto the tracks as well. Trees, roots, weeds, rot, salt air, rain, snow, ice, freeze, thaw, rust, you name it - the elements have beaten this track down hard. It will take a total rebuild in some places to fix things.

It's beginning to look a lot like Chambers St.

Sea Beach Fred has been telling anyone who will listen for some time now how bad things are on his line.

Oh and speaking of which, did you know that the museum old timers were signed as a #4 Sea Beach to 57th St.-Manhattan via Bridge when we left Stillwell Ave. two weeks ago? OK, when we reached 4th Ave., it was re-signed as a D to 205th St., then at 7th Ave. they changed the signs once again to A-Wash. Hts 207th St.

I'm not sure it rises to THAT level but for sure he's got it in for the plutocrats - he's fighting mad with them and he wants his pound of flesh. It's not always the right way to go, as history has already proved.
