An unmarked Chicago police squad car and a CTA Brown Line train collided this afternoon on Kedzie Avenue just north of Wilson Avenue as an officer was coming to the aid of her partner, officials said.

The accident happened about 4 p.m. and involved an Albany Park tactical unit police vehicle and a CTA Brown Line train, according to police sources.

Preliminary reports said the gates were down for a Loop-bound train and when the train passed, the vehicle went around the gates not expecting the Kimball-bound train, according to a CTA spokeswoman. The vehicle and the Kimball-bound Brown Line train collided, she said. Brown Line tracks run at ground level from the Rockwell to Kimball stops.

The injured officer was coming to the aid of her partner, who was chasing someone on foot, police said. They could not immediately say why police were after the person.

The injured officer was being treated in serious condition as of tonight.

Shuttle bus service was used through the area while the cleanup and investigation continued, but as of 7:50 p.m., service had resumed on the Brown Line, according to the CTA Website.

The officer was able to remove herself from the vehicle after the crash, said Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

A CTA employee was also taken to an area hospital in good condition, according to Fire Media information. Zala said the CTA employee was the engineer of the train and was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital for observation.

The accident was under investigation, Zala said.

Normal service on the Brown Line has been restored after an unmarked Chicago Police car struck a train when it drove around the crossing gates Friday afternoon on the Northwest Side.

The accident happened near the 4600 block of North Kedzie in the Albany Park neighborhood.

Trains run across Kedzie Street Friday night but a few hours ago emergency crews arrived for a collision a car and a Brown Line train.

Thirty to forty passengers were escorted off the train and in the car was a female police officer.

"There was a lady coming out of the train to get out of the car. But she was pinned down. So I think somehow she got her loose and pulled her out of the window. I believe the door was jammed," said witness Joseph Abraham.

The officer in the unmarked vehicle was apparently in pursuit of a suspect.

"The chase went across the tracks here on Kedzie. The officer in the squad car tried to get across the tracks to assist her partner," said CPD Deputy Chief John Escalante.

The police officer's injuries are believed to be minor. The train operator was also taken to the hospital for chest pains.

"People don't realize the stress that does come with this job every day. And it's when you go across these gates like this, it can be a car, it can be a person. It can be anything," said Robert Kelly of the Amalgamated Transit Union.

The accident and resulting derailment caused commuting delays for motorists on Kedzie and CTA riders who were shuttled by bus around the accident.

"It would have been great if they would have told us downtown in the loop that this was happening," said commuter Doris Laser. "I could have taken the blue line to my husband's job and gotten on that way much faster."

The CTA Spokesperson says that they will review the incident and look at the video to see if there are any changes that need to be made to improve safety.

Also, the union president we spoke with says he recalls in years' past trains had to actually stop before crossing the avenue, but it's not clear if that procedure would have prevented what happened this evening.

Ever since they invented the two-track railroad line, we've had th9is type of accident. The first-ever fatality on the Brighton Beach Line was a trackworker who stepped out in front of a train going in the opposite direction after a train passed. That was 1878.

The TV station has it mixed up. "Car hits train" implies that the train was in the car's path at the crossing, but "Train hits car" implies the opposite.

If the company was nice back in those days, they gave an easy clerical job to the guy's widow.

If you see the gates down, do not proceed over the tracks. She can't be of no use to her co-worker if she herself is dead or injured.

Well, Chicago police are somewhat notorious for corruption. But no matter how exempt from the law the city and state let them be, no one is exempt from the laws of physics, including those that pertain to momentum of a fast-moving and very heavy train on a relatively low-friction track.

Sorry for the secondary handle, laptop and phone are packed away and I don't know who will use this hotel computer after me.
