Rockaway LIRR petition

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D-Rockaway) said Monday that he has gathered nearly 2,500 signatures on a petition calling for the restoration of the old Rockaway Beach line of the Long Island Rail Road.

In a statement issued by his office, Goldfeder said he is preparing to present the petition to Gov. Cuomo, the Port Authority and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The MTA operates the LIRR.

The line, running between Rockaway Beach and Rego Park, consists of nearly four miles of tracks and stations — much of which are still in place — that were abandoned by the LIRR in 1962 and sold to the city. All tracks and railbeds would have to be replaced for restoration of service.

“It is no secret that public transportation options for Southern Queens and Rockaway are severely limited,” Goldfeder said. “Thousands of residents from across Queens have already shown their support for complete restoration of the Rockaway Beach Rail Line an an efficient transportation alternative.”

The petition can be signed electronically at rockawaybeachrail.com, a link available on Goldfeder’s website.

Here's to another rehash of the same old talk about a line that will never see a train again.

Yes it could do Ozone Park, Woodhaven and Rego Park quite a bit of good, but between pricetags and NIMBYs, everyone should just accept that this line seeing trains is just not going to happen.

Goldfeder is posturing for his political base. There is no chance the Rockaway line will ever see another train.

All this is is yet another annoyingly redundant rehash of an already beatdown topic. Everyone needs to face the facts, that this line will more than likely not ever see another train again. Costs, legal hoopla coupled to (no pun intended) the ever ongoing NIMBYism which had this line dropped from any consideration for new service before, up to and including the consideration of the line as a one-seat ride to JFK Airport.

Its a shame, though. It really would be a useful line.

that's if the line was abandoned, which it isn't. The MTA can reactivate it much easier than you'd think.

What would the busway cost vs. retracking it?

Just remember, if the Governor wants it done, it WILL get done, especially if Genting (the casino operator at Aqueduct) is willing to fork over cash to help pay for it as I would be willing to do if I ran the Casino.

The MTA/City I believe never officially gave up ownership of the line.

If Gov. Cuomo wants it re-built, he can override the NIMBYs and force them to accept it if he wants.
