When you get an RCI and TSS who don't know what they are doing you end up with a cluster-fuck like that. When I was an RCI, I never wanted to have the cavalry sent to help me. I always seemed to manage unless we had to make an "other than head car" move. |

Posted by gbs on Mon Aug 6 22:13:10 2012, in response to Re: # (7) train problems, posted by Train2104 on Mon Aug 6 21:18:34 2012. Here's what's unforgivable: at 6:30, fully a half-hour into the disruption, we got off the D at 42 St and walked down the long hallway to the #7, only to find that no trains were running in either direction, so we had to walk all the way back to 6 Av for the F or M into Queens. No one announced at 42 St (D,F,M) (either on the train or on the platform, either via loudspeaker or in person) that there was no #7 service at the station. Someone could have been stationed at the beginning of the transfer hallway to inform us, so we could save the walk and not lose time going back and forth. It cannot be acceptable that an IRT disruption cannot be known on the IND or BMT. By the time we got to Roosevelt/74, there was a packed Flushing-bound #7 train in the station for a while, and we waited a while longer before the congestion ahead cleared up. A normal 45-minute trip took over twice as long. |

While the dispatcher on the 6th Ave line would not have any knowledge of whats going on on the #7 line, the B2 Desk Supt. in Control Center should have and he should have passed the message on to the critical connection areas in Manhattan and Queens so appropriate announcements could be made. |

An announcement was made at the IRT platforms at Union Square.I feel that announcements regarding the disruption of 7 service between Manhattan and Queens should be repeated every 2 minutes at every station between 14th and 60th Streets. |

Posted by Stef on Tue Aug 7 00:28:44 2012, in response to Re: # (7) train problems, posted by Train2104 on Mon Aug 6 21:26:00 2012. One of my gremlins reported a brake pipe rupture. There could be any number of reasons why it would take so long. I don't know where the train was when it crapped out, but if it was in between stations and not going anywhere because it couldn't charge, a rescue train may have had to come in and get those passengers out of the way. And it was still rush hour when the initial incident occurred. Perhaps the powers that be were waiting for the rush to die down before attempting any moves with this disabled train.Besides, if the train was operated other than head end, that in itself would prove to be difficult operating 6 cars back. Please treat anything I say as mere conjecture. I can't say in any official capacity as to what transpired because I wasn't there. Regards, Stef |

I was off today, thank god. They had so many trains stuck in Manhattan I hear, that they had to start wrong-railing some trains out. There was a train on Track 2 at Grand Central - 42 Street (not going anywhere, obviously). It was there for so long that Transit ordered it taken out of service (possibly to be used as a rescue train). But people on the train refused to leave, so the police had to be called in. |

In a case like that, could a rescue train/engine pull the disabled train out, or does someone have to crawl under the cars to fix the pipe? (since one can't walk alongside the train in the tunnel, IIRC) |

Posted by jabrams on Wed Aug 8 21:51:20 2012, in response to Re: # (7) train problems, posted by Railman718 on Tue Aug 7 07:52:13 2012. Can they easily determine if the rupture is in the front section of the train or the rear section by separating the two sections, then move the passengers to the good section and return or move forward to the next station with 1/2 the train? Do the cars separate as easy as it was on Pelham 123 without having to climb down to the trackbed? |
