Your free ride is over

If this was already covered, I apologize, I haven't been paying much attention to the board lately.

This past week marked the end of a free, legal entry to the subway system that was open to the public for a number of months. Does anyone know where it was? If so did you use it at all?

Maybe it's Atlantic Avenue - Barclay's Center entrance on the (D), (N) and (R), I was going to swipe my card through the turnstile, then a cop pointed me to a different turnstile and was like, "you can enter for free".

Not Atlantic-Barclays. In fact, for must of the duration, this entrance had no turnstiles.

I would have said the B42 at Rockaway Parkway (you don't have to go through turnstiles, even though you have to pay fare on the B42) but that's been many years.

Maybe something at Broadway - Lafayette when they were building the uptown 6 connection?

I would say Staten Island Railway, but it's not really a subway and it isn't only for a few months.

The guesses about 62nd / New Utrecht seem very possible, but if not, then could you at least say whether it can be figured out from a distance just by knowing about current service situations or if you would never know if you didn't see it for yourself?

It sounds like something to do with a station renovation.

Another thought, though. They've been playing with the locations of turnstiles at Willets Point over the years. Has there been a way, legally, onto the express platform without swiping at any point?

Don't they charge to get into the museum? Besides, it's not connected (at least not w/ revenue service) to the rest of the system.

Well, the turnstiles were still there for a lot of the construction period, even though the gates were open or missing (last I checked on Friday, they still are).

We have a winner!

It was only the entrance at Fulton/Nassau, which was severed from the rest of the complex. In theory, it wasn't used much, because how many people are riding the J one stop? But the savvy cheapskate could ride to broad and cross to the other side...

There is another "legal free" entry method...go to a certain booth at 34 St (IND 8 Av) and ask for access to the Lost Property Unit.
