Unfortunately, 2 overt bigots work for the transit system, and they need to be outed.

As some would note, it's one thing to simply choose not to speak English even at STM, but it's another to be a douche about it...

Even on the other side of the frontier, I was the only one pushing beyond 110 km/h on the A-15. In a decade or so, I'm tempted to say the meme is a bit overblown.

Admittedly, I was surprised at how few troopers were patrolling on the drive that I took up there. The Northway isn't as generous with hiding spots compared to other highways, but I'm left wondering if the state cut their budget...

Stuck up does not mean that. Stuck up implies that they think that they are better than you and perhaps too good to help. What you are describing could easily be attributed to a different way of interacting that you (perhaps incorrectly) assume is something personal. Or maybe they are just assholes. That's why I asked for more specifics.

Personally I prefer when people are standoffish and mind their own business. I would probably seem stuck up to you.

I wasn't aware that there was any French spoken outside of the Quebec province.

Francophone Canada actually ends up over spilling into portions of Western Ontario. Yes, there's Ottawa, the national capital, but you'll also find them in the rural region of eastern Ontario between Ottawa and Montreal, but also around Sudbury in northern Ontario. As Olog noted, Acadians still reside in New Brunswick with their own cultural identity from the Quebecois.

One should also note that a decent chunk of the French Canadian population ended up pouring into Northern New England during the 19th Century.

To think, it's cheaper to let them sit at home than to collect revenue. Of course, the upside is that it's better for tourism. The Northway is so much nicer at 100 mph than 65. :-)

I remember hearing at one time that in New Mexico, English and Spanish were both official languages. According to Wikipedia, the original state constitution required all laws to be in both English and Spanish, although the term "official language" wasn't actually used. The state courts are still largely bilingual, although the requirement for laws to be published in Spanish is apparently no longer in effect. And the state song, designated in 1995, has a title that is part English, part Spanish. Quite a different approach from Arizona.

FWIW, you'd actually have to actually learn French to get a decent job unless one has connections to an Anglophone. As for me, Montreal is nice, but I never fell in love with the city in the same way that I did Vancouver or Berlin.

I've found Montreal to be very nice for a city, though the parking rules are a bit insane. What I really enjoy about Quebec though is out in places like Victoriaville, Saint-Bonaventure, Sainte-Croix and places which aren't so "metropolitan" ... Montreal can get a bit rowdy. Vancouver's cool and all, but it's San Francisco du nord.

And no, non comprende Angleterre. :)

/sigh/ A little sociology lesson might be helpful here. People who've lived under oppression, yes, can be a bit "sensitive". Example: although relations between Ireland and England are much improved, go to one of the Irish pubs in the Bx and they're still singing, "We'll spit on the Queen and bash in her head." LOL! On the one hand, we want to say, "GET OVER IT." But maybe we don't know or feel what they know or feel.

Recall that thousands of French Canadians from the eastern provinces were literally forced into the Atlantic by the Brits and sailed around until someone allowed them in. (They're today's Cajuns [i.e. Acadians] in Louisiana.) Until the 1930s, Montreal-- Montreal!!-- was majority English speaking and the French had GREAT jobs as maids, butlers and servants-- IF they spoke English. Like the Irish in the Bronx, sometimes it takes a while to "get over it." And most French in Canada HAVE gotten over it. But what group doesn't have its hotheads? (i.e., like the member here who proclaimed that the "morons in Quebec... are racist," failing to grasp the irony of his own words...)

That happened to me in Montreal last year. I know a little french and asked the station attendant in French if she spoke English. She didn't and directed me to someone who did.

The rest of the trip, I "Bonjoured" or "Mercied" all the operators and badly murdered the french language at a local McDonalds where the guy who waited on me realized I was English and politely spoke it to me.

I'm pretty sure in his head, he was like "Stupid Americans!!!"

"I'm pretty sure in his head, he was like "Stupid Americans!!"

Nonsense. He thought no such thing. Do you think Quebecois people are unaware that their linguistic community is a small dot in the otherwise English-speaking ocean of North America? Of course we know that.

And we know that it's the rare Anglo who bothers to learn other languages. Of all the truly bilingual people in Canada, very few are native English speakers. On the other hand, the majority of Quebecois know at least some English, many are thoroughly bilingual. Brian Mulroony, a former PM, was native Eng speaking but grew up in Que. province. His French was flawless.

I'm amused that some members here are annoyed that French survives at all in Quebec. "Should have been phased out," I see here. I'm willing to bet that many of these English-philes are also strong supporters of "States' Rights" here in the U.S.-- yet would deny a huge Canadian Province (the size of the U.S. east of the Mississippi) the VAST majority of whom are French speaking, the same right. Pretty funny, huh?

In contrast, I'm in that weird bridge where my French is above basic phrases, but because I rarely use it, it sounds unnatural and stilted with poor tense choices and conjugations. It's exacerbated by my last name and ethnic background which makes up a majority of Montreal's black population. So the presumption is that I'm a local even after I open my mouth.

Although, it was funny to call STM, and push "Eight" for English* and keep getting French. It wasn't as funny on the third try while roaming on Verizon Wireless.

*Similar to "Ocho" for Spanish in the States.
