Lite: 207 Yard to 59, cross to 8th Ave. local to W.4th, then F line to n/Jay, then back to A line to make reverse move to museum.

Trip participants @11 AM: A line to 80/Hudson relay, then back to Jay. Relay via F to Coney Island. You can stay on the train or go chasing.

Then it will go into the middle track @ Ave. X, run to 18th Ave., back to Ave. X and back to 18th Ave again. From there back to Stillwell where everybody else has to get off.

GO says it lays up to CIYD till 4:30 PM. Reboard on the Q line platform, Brighton line to DeKalb, D line to 125, A line to 175 where the trip ends. Train lays up to 207 YD.

We crawled at a snail's pace aling the Sea Beach, then did reasonably well along 4th Ave. Just as we reached the subway portal, one of the crew members changed the front signd fron 4/Sea Beach/57th St. Manhattan via Bridge to D/6th Ave./Concourse 205th St.

The old timers really unwound along the 6th Ave express tracks, thundering and blazing all the way. As we pulled out of 7th Ave. and made the turn towards 59th-CC, the front signs were changed once again to A/Wash. Hts 207th St. I hadn't ridden on a train of old timers along the CPW express since December of 1969, so it was a real treat to experience it again.

All in all a most delightful day and a rare opportunity to be in the area when a nostalgia run is scheduled. LOVE THOSE OLD TIMERS! Love 'em!!

The other videos show various elevated lines in both color and in black and white. Enjoy and once again these are not my videos.

Not to try and top you, but I had the pleasure of choosing to ride the R1/9s (and 10s-17s) every school day from 1955 to 1959, along with Hi and LoVs, Gate Cars, Standards, D-Types and Steinways (hope I didn't forget anything) since my school was in midtown Manhattan and I lived in Queens, but the ultimate in pleasure were the Multis. To this day, nothing, in my opinion, even comes close to them for acceleration and probably top speed. Unforttiunately, none were saved.....

Indeed he does. He talked about how he wound up qualifying to run the old timers.

A funny thing happened at 59th-CC. We stopped to let a young lady get off the train (Bill Wall keyed open one leaf) and as we pulled in, he yelled to Steve, "Don't forget to stop!" You could hear Steve yell back from inside the cab, "I know! I know!" Had it not been for those WDs before 125th, it would have been a six-minute run. We rocketed past 72nd, 81st and 86th. The 6th Ave. express run was very fast.

The R-10s used to take the curve before 125th n/b at a good clip. I heard the reason that whole business was put in was to prevent a runaway train from roaring into 125th. Locals go tearing around that curve. Go figure.

There's a similar deal going n/b along 4th Ave. in Brooklyn. Regardless of the equipment, expresses build up a good head of steam to the point where they're screaming past 9th St., then abruptly hit the brakes and plod the rest of the way to Pacific St.

Yep ... as long as you kept the timers clearing ahead of you, you could enter at about 2/3 the speed you ran up there with. Southbound, about 1/2. What makes me giggle about the WD's though is that the timers worked just as well ... I consider it typical overkill. Timed zones were waiting for you even if nothing had passed them for a half hour.

Don't mind me, I can see the point of them for unusual reroutes like what happened at 14th Street that horrible night. And with CWR down there now, and windows closed and sealed, you don't exactly have track joints to tell you how fast you're moving anymore. But to put those damnable things on a mainline with straight iron ahead ... wow. :(

Not to mention gear pitch. For whatever reason, C# above middle C seems to be the "sweet spot" for tunnel reverb with the old timers; that pitch comes through loud and clear. At higher speeds, even with the windows open, the gear pitch was hard to hear. Once we got going up CPW, the gears were at about Ab above middle C - we were moving, no question about it. The good old days all over again.

1000 had a hung door; its guard light would stay on and crew members were busy jostling door leaves until the indication fairy smiled. There wasn't a whole lot of cap slapping - not until we were on our way back to Manhattan, anyway. We stopped at Pacific, W4th, 34th, 42nd, 47-50 (keyed open one leaf) and 59th (keyed open one leaf) before those of us who were still on board were let off at 175th. Hey, I wasn't about to pass up a chance at a CPW express dash - hadn't been on one of those on the prewar cars since December of 1969.

Well ... when running them, yardmasters were generally kind enough to ensure that the #2 end of the car was at the lead and the tail, and inside the cab you got your growl loud and clear when that was the case. So hearing the motors was rarely an issue unless some idiot pointed the 1 end out. And as to the doors, heh ... if that pin didn't drop into the hole, the indication fairy was out on a comfort break. A small beating usually solved that. If they didn't have to swing panels, then it was still a good door. :)

If I'd had enough advance warning, probably would have come down for it and busted yer chops personally. Heh.
