Yeah, I always got a kick out of them on the "real" railroad. ANd with the ubermotors, no less. :)Never got up in the ceiling of them like I have on some others, but the way it was explained to me years ago the REAL problem with them was the way the door hangers were built - with the louvres on the rooftop, the door tracks were "exposed" to weather and schmutz would come through the roof vents, land on the (unprotected?) door tracks and that's all she wrote. Add snow, ice, leaves and dirt and show over. But Harold loves his limo. Heh. |

If it's been more than a few years since your last visit to TMNY, you might be surprised what's changed. The idea that Less is More has been embraced. The TMNY collection has undergone a reduction recently, and yes, Branford played a big role. The Seashore, Baltimore and Connecticut trolley museums helped part out some of the cars too. I'm told some of the seats from the MBTA PCCs are already installed in a BSM car, and a compressor from one of the ex. SEPTA cars is now in service on one of the Nostalgia train Arnies.The current roster is here. The museum also just revised its mission statement with a vision and key goals defined. |

The first import step in the implementation of the grant happened last week with the City of Kingston posting the Request for Proposals for engineering services for the project. The project total is actually going to be close to $860,000 with the state match added in.Reading this might make your eyes glaze over, but here's the RFP document: http://www.tmny.org/TMNY_RFP_railconsulting.pdf. There will be another RFP later in the year for the actual construction portion. I want to emphasize this is strictly a capital grant. A total of $0.00 from the project goes to the TMNY budget. Your donations are still greatly needed to help keep the doors open and the lights on! |

Though TMNY has a big grant for track rehab underway, I want to remind everyone that being a municipally administered capital grant, it adds a grand total of $0.00 to the museum's operating budget. The museum is still a private non-profit organization on its own for all expenses like fuel, heat, lighting, restoration, preservation, maintenance, payroll, etc.As an experiment, we've set up a fundraising campaign on a 'crowd funding' web site. The link is here: http://www.gofundme.com/Mind-the-Gap. When you make a donation, it gives you options to post that you supported the cause on your Twitter and Facebook accounts. This is what helps a campaign 'go viral'. As more people donate, more people see what others are donating to. At the moment it has some stock footage of the Johnstown trolley running, but we are working to produce a short video to better promote the museum and hopefully prompt people to open their wallets. It might be a bit of time before the video is ready. In the mean time, if you could throw a few bucks our way (tax deductible of course), it would be most appreciated! |

There's nothing like a sense of urgency to help spur support. Shore Line's doing a good job of fundraising for the Elevating the Collection campaign.However, with the possible exception of the railfan community, TMNY is in a very different 'market' from Shore Line. TMNY has its own lawmakers to woo, stakeholders to partner with, volunteers to recruit and members to impress. Besides capital grants where TMNY has been doing pretty well lately, there is a need to focus on the museum's financial future. The challenge is how to create a sense of urgency to feed an annual budget or endowment. |

At least in Kingston we're working from the bottom up...Kingston's new Mayor who entered office Jan 1 of this year has already been to the trolley museum at least three times that I know of, including the volunteer bbq & picnic on July 4. We've never had that much attention from a sitting mayor before (with the possible exception of 1983 when the deal to move TMNY from Brooklyn to Kingston was signed)...hopefully its a sign of solid future support from him! |
