Agreed. Espicially in those days when unions had much more influence & power. Shops, resturants etc that did'nt use union labor usually had something bad happen. If you were to be foolish to cross a picket line, you were definetly fuckin with your heartbeat.

Actually, I have an even better idea. Someone should start a whole discussion board where anything not related to 76 St is off-topic and a violation of the rules. The main page would have a 24-hour web camera pointed at 76 Street and Pitkin Avenue, on the off chance that a sinkhole developed and some new information might become available. A donation button would be available for anyone who wanted to contribute to the fund for renting radar equipment or backhoes or whatever other tools were needed to investigate further. There would be smiling photographs of famous people standing where the station ought to be. We could even have a contest to compose the official 76 St song.

If that wall is cinder block then it could have been filled with dirt, my dad had contractors fill our basement wall with dirt and it was all cinder block it helped keep the basement warm and to strengthen the foundation so that's what was most likely done to give strength to the wall as well.

While I can't answer for anybody else, I think the principal reason fro this mass obsession is the mystery surrounding whether or not anything including a partial station shell was constructed behind that wall. Utica upper, So 4 St, and Roosevelt Av don't engender the same obsession since they either were at some point, or in some cases still are, accessible, at least to NYCTA employees, and they have been documented in photographs. This is not the case with 76 St unless someone who was in there at some point in the past has taken photos and is keeping them as much of a secret as the very existence of the station shell itself.

Well the station does exist on the model board in the control tower at the Euclid Avenue Station. There is a now black-taped over portion that says "76th Street". It also says on the board, that the next tower is at Cross Bay Blvd".

There are also two tracks coming from the Pitkin Yard heading towards the 76th Street station shell. When Pitkin Yard originally opened, the yard leads toward 76 Street were usable to relay short trains on. Now those two tracks are no longer connected via switches. Parts of the trackways still exist, but the switches were removed and also end in a cinderblock wall.

If you have read some of my posts, i have mentioned that as the possible reason why work wasn't continued down Pitkin Av. It could even be the reason why the possible existence of the station is shrouded in so much mystery. The contractors may have gone a little to far before ceasing construction even after encountering the water problem down there.

I don't know if anyone suggested this , or how easy it is to get , but maybe someone can get some blueprints or locations of the sewer lines near 76st and pitkin ave. Surely if there's something down there then the sewer lines would have to go around it and leave a nice gap where the station and tunnel should be. This could also work with a blue print of gas lines and or electrical lines in the area.

and like G1 said , im pretty sure everything's flooded down there by now if the station, or part of the station exist.
