Astoria wants (W), QM22 bus back in service

In light of recent public transportation restorations across the city, Astoria’s elected officials and civic members demanded Tuesday that the MTA bring back the W subway line and the QM22 express bus.

“The MTA has decided to ignore this community,” said Costa Constantinides, an Astoria district leader and a City Council candidate.

The request has been a common one for Astorians. Community members had protested the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s budget cuts-inspired decision to get rid of the lines in 2010 as well as conducted petitions and more rallies to restore services after they were eliminated.

The MTA did not respond to requests for comment.

The W train ran from the Ditmars Boulevard subway stop at 31st Street in Astoria along the Broadway line and ended at the Whitehall Street stop in Lower Manhattan from 2004-10, and ran from Ditmars to Coney Island in Brooklyn from 2001-04. The QM22 ran from Jackson Heights to Midtown Manhattan, making stops in Astoria and Long Island City.

State Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) called getting rid of the lines in 2010 a step backward. He said many Astorians work in Manhattan and wanted the additional public transportation options.

“The QM22 is a lifeline that we still hear about in our offices,” he said.

The senator said he objected to how even though the MTA was restoring services in Brooklyn and the Bronx, few lines were restored in Queens. An exception was Sunnyside’s B24 weekend bus service.

State Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas (D-Astoria) said in the first four years of her legal career she took the W train into Manhattan every day. She said the train was packed quickly when she was riding it and the N, which runs along a similar route, is overcrowded.

“The facts are that this is a growing community,” Simotas said. “I thought the city’s mission was to get people out of their cars and into mass transit.”

Michael Murphy, an member of the public transport advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, said Astoria itself has also become a destination. He said restoring the subway and bus lines would be critical and compared it to cutting a utility like gas or water.

“When you cut, you’re taking something away that people need in their daily lives,” Murphy said.

So what is the "Q" now, chopped liver? Or do they want three services on the Astoria Line?

I don't think the letter 'Q' exists in the Astorians' alphabet.

Astoria now has the Q and the N - two services. The only difference since the W was ended is that anyone going south of Canal Street must transfer to the R at say 14th or 34th St. Otherwise the Astoria residents still get the same service.

This is another example of a loudmouth self-serving politician who has nothing else to do but criticize the MTA - always a good punching bag.

And they still have one seat access to the four Broadway local stations (28, 23, 8, and Prince Streets). Plus the Q to Manhattan runs later, what are they whining about the few people who travel to Lower Manhattan outside of rush hours?

Paraphrase from my post on BusChat: If they cut one of the N/Q but quadrupled the other line, running it at 40+ TPH, they would call it a service cut and demand that the cut line be restored while leaving the other at 40 TPH.

The amount of time these people spent in one session fighting for the return of the W may very well be several times the amount of time they have lost by having the Q instead.

Do these people realize that from 2001-2004 the W was essentially the present-day Q for them anyway?

Just rename the Q the W. Then Astoria can have it's W back. Brighton Line riders know how to handle line renamings. Just the traditional railfans who know Q belongs nowhere but on the Brighton Line would be unhappy.

No, this demonstrates politicians as craven, ignorant opportunists. Telling your constituents that the Q actually provides more service than the W did doesn't get your name in the paper.

The real problem is these politicians are probably using one or two people who are very vocal about wanting service to lower Manhattan and probably too lazy to make a transfer to the (R) anywhere before Union Square to get their name in the paper, not realizing that the (Q) actually provides more service to Astoria overall.

Oh, and the (N) does run to lower Manhattan late at night when it operates via the tunnel.

Except that there's no longer a 1-seat ride from Astoria to the Financial District, which there was previously...people may be feeling this loss.

If there's enough cars, which TA employees on here state there are NOT, it would decent to of the TA to do a few peak-of-the-peak W trains- just like there was a Continental-Whitehall N service from 1976-87...

Now, with R160s, changing the signs to another letter isn't as hard as setting up a rush-hour EE would have been..
