LION doubts that nobody could have bid on such a contract without union labor. Could a contractor have hired some no-union people for some sort of a task. Sure he could have, but it would have been minor work like sweeping the floor or something. Even that would set off union workers like a firecracker and would keep the rumor going Forever.

I suspect that any other site which talks about the "non-union" issue at 76 St. simply copied the information from Brennan, and that he simply made the story up to provide a semi-plausible "New York" explanation for why the station would be hidden.

Except everything you posted is not proff 76th Street was ever finished. A board in a tower is not proof the station was ever built. Go out to 76th Street with ground penetrating radar and it will show NOTHING is there. Subway stations don't just vanish.

so YOU have been out there with ground penatrating radar? no,stations don`t vanish but blueprints do.I had this same argument with a board member of the ERA about 10 years ago.:show me the blueprints"he said. what really was amusing about this encounter was that he had just shown me & a select handfull of others the blueprints for the signals from beyound the curtain wall up to 106st.I told him "did you ever think that the way you got the blueprints was the same way some other buff who knew it would never be built saved them for posterity?" he was at a loss for words.a friend of his who worked for the t.a.at the time saved them from the garbage & gave them to him.in 1964 I heard from my maintainer that when pitkin yard was first opened he worked the yard as a signal helper.he & his maintainer walked the then opened yard leads to the partially built station.he described it the same way 2 cops I worked with and several members of this board who talked to their friends who had been in the station all described it the same way.please explain this fact to me of how can this be? none of these people have a connection to one another yet they all describe the station exactly alike.what research have you done on this matter? I would like to know.ps,say hello to gene carson for me.

Hey, I survived my wife's 'changes' for several years. You just have to hide all of the guns (not easy- I had 12 Lugers!), knives, and other sharp objects. But, after a few years, they are finished with them. Can't say the same for all of these 76th Street threads. Why can't people just accept that the IND built the tunnel that included a 76th St station shell. During or after WWII, they decided to connect all service to the Liberty Ave el, walled up the unused tunnel, and that was it. WHY DO PEOPLE STILL KEEP ASKING ABOUT 76TH STREET, IN CAPITAL LETTERS, THIS TIME??? YOU HAVE TOLD THEM AS MUCH AS YOU KNOW, YET THEY CRAVE MORE AND MORE!!!

One of the problems on any discussion board is treating a question that has been asked a hundred times as if it were brand new. I've been through that on other boards, and that problem itself is nothing new. If this were a different type of board, perhaps a "sticky" would be made of one 76 St discussion so that at least all newcomers might look at that first and know everything that has ever been posted here about that topic. If they asked the same questions after reading that, then they would be subject to the supreme penalty that military law can provide.

I have always suspected that there was some work performed on the station when construction resumed on it at the end of WWII which accounts for the station shel as being described as having the S/B station wall partially tiled. That would seem to indicate that TR's comment about no further work being done past 1942 is a bit inaccurate. There was an extremely corrupt city administration in place after WWII and while this is the first I am hearing about non union labor being used, I think that there was some sort of underhanded operation going on that necessitated a cover up that exists to this day.

I will refrain from using capitals although I should shout this since I have explained it many times in threads on this subject. After unification was achieved in 1940, the plan from that time on was to BOTH connect the IND to the Fulton St El AND continue the subway down Pitkin Av and connect it to the Rockaway line from a portal below the LIRR ROW. The Euclid model board bears this out as the 1948 photo of it clearly shows the subway continuing to 76 St and the proposed Grant Av station. A contract book that I saw of the connection to the Fulton El states that beyond (RR south) of Hudson St interlocking existing BMT signaling was to be used indicating that there were no plans for what we now know as Liberty Jct. A plan dated in 1950 concerning new subways, however shows a connection from the Fulton El to the LIRR ROW at a point S/O Rockaway Blvd (Lib Jct) indicating that at some point between the time of the original plans in 1948 and 1950, something happened that caused the city to cease further construction down Pitkin Av and connect to the LIRR at the present location. Why the plans were changed seems to be as much of a mystery as the existence of the station shell itself but I heard somewhere which I can't recall that the contractors encountered some soil and water problems in the area past 76 St and that is why construction was halted.

Since I was first there (at street level) in 1962, the entire area has been done over so that any possible trace of either ventilation gratings, or provisions for entrances is long gone. There were even further changes made since I went there in 1983 and observed an IND manhole cover about a half block east of the bulkhead wall. When I went there 5 years ago, the street had been repaved and that manhole was gone.

A whole lot of sledge hammers too!ps,for those who DON`T know, thats my shovel as I tried to dig under the Right section of the wall at least 5 or more years ago.when I did dig enough dirt, not sand to get the shovel at least the length of the shovel more dirt fell in to cover the hole.I tried several more times with the same result.the left side of the wall had too much ballast plus a rotted out tie WITH the spike holes clearly visible UNDER the wall.

Dear The Moose.

If you believe that "someone" must report this station to the MTA, please, be that self appointing individual to make the thype of report you feel should be made. However, be prepared to provide the facts, minus the hearsay rumors when making your complaint.

Go for it baby........

Could a DA go forward & present the facts as they stand with 76th Street at present to a Grand Jury to seek an indictment?

To quote SGT Friday, the facts mam, just the facts.....

being an ind.station, center entrance like the rest of the A line from liberty ave.to shepherd ave. the staircases would be at 76st&pitkin ave.the only thing your`re going to see is a plain sidewalk.nobody is going to be on the layup tracks below grant ave or the cut from the yard leads for the most part.
