And to think, onetime the LIRR used BUDD RDC as scoots, and had plans to use an inter city type buses equipped with those highrailer things used on Maintenance of Way Trucks.

We have come a great distance, ya think?

The biker bar (not to worry, not outlaw bikers) The Maples, in Manorville, LI, is right next to the Greenpoint Line with a RR Crossing (one track) right next to the place. On weekend afternoons, they open the outside tables in the rear with waitress service outside. The track is right on the other side of the fence. Of course on weekends there's only 2 trains after noon so if you want to be there you should check the schedule.
There's no real public transit there (that I know of) but the LIE is about a half mile away.

I circled the eating area in the Google Maps image.

I've never heard anyone refer to the Pt Jeff-Huntington shuttle as a "scoot" before. The term is obviously usually used to refer to the east of KO runs, but I've seen it used to refer to Patchougue-Babylon turns.

Wouldn't new RDC's be more efficent then two diesels and 2 passanger cars on the Scoots?

I remember before they electrified the Main Line when ALL the trains either went to Port Jeff or Ronkonkoma. Huntington was just a regular station. The third rail on the main line only went as far as the Oyster Bay split and up to East Williston.

They're supposed to buy DMU's before the decade is out, IIRC. They would be used to provide more frequent service east of Speonk and Riverhead(?).

Any LIRR shuttle is fair game for the term Scoot, whether it be Sag Harbor or West Hempstead.

Not in terms of operating labor, but in terms of fuel, equipment maintenance, and track depreciation, yes.

Snazzy! There are also many great photo opportunities near railroad crossings in Southold, like on Cox Lane where you can capture the train within the wine vineyards!

Are there any of these types in the continental US that are under utilized, that can be "tested" during summer service?

So most trains still terminated at KO even before electrification? Also, did PJ have more service before electrification to Huntington?

As far as I remember. I used to use Westbury in the 60's (Hempstead if I took the bus) and I remember all the trains were either Ronkokoma or Port Jeff. Port Jeff did have more service than now as all the trains on that line went there.
