Sixty-five years ago today on July 10, 1947, and as a preview for the future fleet of 400 IND-BMT cars purchased under the R-10 contract (and to arrive starting one year later), the prototype sample car #1575 [rebuilt from an R-7A originally built in 1938] was on display for public viewing at the IND 34th Street-6th Avenue station. It had already been seen in the same way the previous day at the Chambers Street-Hudson Terminal station.

At Herald Square, the car was viewed by some 10,000 visitors from the hours of 11:00am to 8:00pm, by which interest had decreased by that time on that day. The photos that are linked here are most likely what the public would see inside as to the first post-WWII car design for the NYC subway system. And so it goes...

Nice, but I still would like to see pictures of 1575 with it's original R7A body & an accident photo.

I bet the one thing that impressed the sheep most that day was the florescent lighting, which was not all that common anywhere in those days.

Neat!!! That flourescent-lit car must have been something to see back then- especially when the whole system was so dimly-lit, and flourescents lighting itslef was high tech!

Dad and I missed the two exhibition dates, so on one of his days off (a Sunday or Tuesday?) we entered the 207th Street station, looked around, and inquired of the towerman whether it was in service. "Yes, coming north soon." So we rode it south. Of course, the fluorescent lighting, different colors, and the small fans interested me. Dad thought the roller signs were too small (and they became grimy over the years) and the window seats were too squished into the walls).

In 8th grade, the teacher, Mother Camillus, asked for a one-page composition, the "biography" of an object. I submitted "The Biography of Car 1575," born in Berwick. Mom saved the returned composition. Decades later, I had to find the ACF shop in Berwick.

Left it open to expansion...any terminal from Rockaway Avenue to Grant Avenue would've qualified!!!

Thank you for posting these. Isn't 1575 now at the Transit Museum?

Maybe its the black and white, but the interior sure looks depressing.

That destination sign is rarely seen because Broadway-East NY was the terminal only from 12/30/46 to 11/28/48.

Yes, it is there! No color photos of that car in its new look for 1947 have not turn up yet, but a few early color photos of the brand new R-10's are known to exist somewhere. One was used in a postcard issued by Audio-Visual Designs, Inc. showing brand new car #1803 at the A.C.F. plant in Berwick, PA.

Pretty lively motor too whenever she gets to lead the parade. I like that electric blue and yellow paint job they did on the floor. That wasn't there on 11/04/1969 when I actually got to see her on the road (in "KK" service).
