On July 1, 1937, the Brodaway station opened to the public.

Actually all stations on the IND Brooklyn-Queens Crosstown line from Nassau St to Bergen St opened on this date.

Yes, "BRODAWAY" is still there in tile form, as I rode the "G" line going southbound (in R-68A car #5192) from Metropolitan Avenue-Grand Street to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets yesterday (6/29/12) to acknowledge the anniversary of that route's connecting extension. By the way, it's Nassau Avenue [not Street] you are referring to.

While the "GG" is a unique subway route, I wish that they had taken the money for that route- and for the Concourse, and put it towards the 2nd Ave subway.

2 related questions.

Was the construction on South 4th done simultaneously?

How was Bedford Nostrand intended to operate? I've spent some time in that tower recently, and been scratching my head as to how E3/E4 would see service

E3/4 would have been a terminal track like Whitehall, with southbound trains terminating staying on "E3" from the Lafayette Av line. Heading back "north," they would have switched onto "E4" after departing. Through service from/to Lafayette would have used the constructed switches n/o B-N to the current mainline tracks. I used quotes around the track designations because I don't know what the Lafayette line would have been chained as.

i need to check again, but i feel like those diamonds aren't north of the station (like the track map site shows)

that was my confusion about the thru service. seemed like the middle track would need to be bi-directional.

I'm pretty sure the switches are there, otherwise they wouldn't be able to turn trains when they short-line at B-N without 2 reverse moves.

The middle track connects to both tails like Whitehall, just a slightly different layout.

I was almost certain of that but since it has been over 30 years since I rode through there and saw them. Knowing Transit's penchant for removing switches, I wouldn't have put it past them to have done so and required a Chinese fire drill to turn service at B-N.

Yes, 57th Street/6th Avenue opened on this date 44 years ago on July 1, 1968, with non-rush hour "B" and rush hour "KK" trains using the station as their northern terminal in Manhattan. Stayed that way until the weekend of October 28-29, 1989.

The Crosstown line was originally planned as a BMT route leaving Queensborough Plaza on an elevated structure along the same route as the IND was to have been up until Broadway. Then, it was to have follow along several streets until it reached the Franklin Avenue Line, and connecting with it at Fulton Street.

The provisions could be seen at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Queens Boulevard where you might see the steel track support coming out eastward. Credit (or maybe blame) Mayor John Hylan by seizing the route away from the BMT and place it under control as an IND subway route.

Whenever there have been track reconstructions or service delays along this route, "G" trains can be turned back in the middle track at Bedford-Nostrand. The switches are still there, but I have never seen the two pocket lay-up tracks east of the station being used to store trains.

I recall seeing them ramp-down right after the switches from the RFW of a n/b GG and then they were gone from view because of the tunnel veering left right after that ramp. I think Peter's diagram gives the wrong impression about them being at the same level and dead-ending before the turn into Marcy. IINM, they end at Marcy, below the revenue portion.

Its a good thing the IND built the Concourse, the areas it serves is densely populated and even though the (4) runs along side it both lines have GREAT ridership. The (4) would have been really overcrowded if the IND didn't build a subway there. And they serve different parts of Mantthan.

I agree with you about the Crosstown line.

The City decided to build the Concourse line instead. Otherwise, they would have had to either condenm the 2nd Ave el (a la 6th Ave el) or underpin the pillars from 129th St to 23rd Street. Either way, it would have been expensive. But, at least we would have had a 4 track subway under 2nd Ave, unlike this 2 track compromise thing with the stations far apart!

There's a similar error on the track map at 2 Av (F), where it looks like the tail tracks end before the north-bound track, when in reality the north-bound F track dips below the tail tracks and rises as it enters the 2 Av station.

I pointed this out several years ago, and it may have been corrected in the newer editions of the book, but the online map still has the error.

Although there have been threats over the years to get rid of the Jerome Ave Line- fist, the IND was supposed to replace it..and then again inthe early 80s there I beleive there was talk of eliminating it to save money, and in the early-mid 90s, a plan to close some of its stations, including Mt. Eden Avenue. The last one I actually remember, from before there was an easily accessible public internet...

Good that none of these things actually happened.

I truly hate to argue with your, sir,---but in fact, the K disappeared after 8/27/76, so from then until sometime in 1978, the B had 57/6th to itself. Then the JFK Express came along, which used 57th/6th as its terminal until 21st/Queensbridge opened.

Fro 6 months or so, from the opening of 21st/Queensbridge until the death of the JFK, it provided regular-fare service between 57th/6th & Queensbridge (premium-fare service the rest of the route).

Yes, and all of your statements are correct, so no argument from me on this topic. The original statement that I made should have been carefully worded as being the "B" and rush-hour "KK" trains first using that station when it opened back then. All the changes in service you mentioned are true.

To clarify also, it remained basically as a *terminal* station until the opening of the 63rd Street Extension, but the tunnel provision north of 57th Street (up to a point near 5th Avenue) was laid out with tracks previously in the earlier part of the decade. I recall for the 50th Anniversary IND celebration in September 1982, the museum R-1/9's was able to come in southbound from the 63rd Street tunnel as their "entrance" recorded by the TV cameras back then.
